Depending on the type of holiday you are after and what you want to see and do, from the hustle and bustle of Palma to the dreamy coastlines or the get away from it all luxury escapes inland, in Mallorca everything is possible. So if you’re asking me, I always choose to stay in a quiet place far away from the city’s agitation, as the traditional town and municipality of Algaida. This location is outwardly a typical Mallorcan village with narrow streets without sidewalks, rustic houses with green shutters on the windows and nestled in a huge bed of almond and olive plantations.
Located in one of the prettiest parts of the inland, this place it encompasses six small mountains and is one of the few areas in Mallorca which can have rain at any time of the year. Algaida is far more than just cozy village idyll and although the town is not at the top of tourist brochures, it is a must visit for food and culture lovers. In fact, a lot of people would say that you have not tasted Mallorca before if you didn’t eat in Algaida. Aside from famous hermits, Algaida is also famous as a centre of the Mallorcan style of cuisine, known as ‘mallorquinischen’ which is quite distinct from Spanish cuisine.
It involves cooking with pork and chicken and lots of almonds, olives and vegetables and there are many restaurants specialising in this type of cookery in the municipality – it is a must for any visitor to give it a try. Algaida has most to offer on the outskirts of the town and municipality. The hilly nature of the area makes it a popular place for cyclists in search of a challenge. The village also boasts a couple of charming churches, as well as some of Mallorca’s many disused windmills. The one located in the town is one of the easiest ones to photograph! 🙂 So, if you have not yet decided on your location, I suggest you to start with this one. In your first day of holiday you will enjoy the quiet of the city, delicious food and its stunning landscapes.
