RMW516W5–Lucius Posthumius Megellus, (c. 345 – 260 BCE) a politician and general of the Roman Republic, was sent to Tarentum on the southern coast of Apulia, Italy to demand reparation. The Tarentines gave him audience in their theatre, where Posthumius addressed them in such Greek as he could command, but wrongly placed an accent wrong and his listeners burst into laughter; when he remonstrated, they hissed him off the stage. As he retired, his senatorial gown was spatterd with filth, he held up the gown, and the laughter grew. Insulted, Rome declared war against the Tarentines.
