He is considered, with Camillo Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II and Giuseppe Mazzini, as one of Italy's 'fathers of the fatherland'. He commanded and fought in many military campaigns that led eventually to the formation of a unified Italy. He was appointed general by the provisional government of Milan in 1848, General of the Roman Republic in 1849 by the Minister of War.

Known as one of Italy's 'fathers of the fatherland', he became a supporter of Italian unification under a democratic republican government, but after participating in an uprising in Piedmont, he was sentenced to death. He escaped by sailing to South America and spent 14 years in exile. In 1848, he returned to Italy and commanded and fought in military campaigns that eventually led to Italian unification.
