RF2D84AE7–The acorn woodpecker or California woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a medium-sized woodpecker, 21 cm (8.3 in) long, with an average weight of 85 g (3.0 oz). Acorn woodpeckers are larder hoarders. Breeding groups create a food store by drilling holes in a dead tree, and stuffing acorns into them. The group defends the tree against potential robbers. As well as acorns, they also eat insects, fruit, seeds and sometimes tree sap. From Birds : illustrated by color photography : a monthly serial. Knowledge of Bird-life Vol 1 No 4 April 1897
