As a member of the RoyalInstitute of Painters in Water Colours, to which hewas elected in 1882 when the fusion between theOld Dudley Gallery supporters and the Institutewas arranged, he has helped by the consistentquality of his contributions to keep up the standardof pure water-colour work as it was practised bythe greater masters in the past. It is possible that some of the distinctivecharacter of Mr. Cotmans paintings is due to thefact that his training was carried out entirely inthis country.
