American practice of surgery : a complete system of the science and art of surgery . ate in misplaced suprarenal rests (benignhypernephromata). The adenomata of the kidney may become malignant. Glandular benign tumors of the thyroid are of three types, swiple, foetal, and 348 AMERICAN PRACTICE OF SURGERY jxipillifcruu.s adenomata. The siini)lo adononia consists of follicles filled ^vith col-loid, resembling those of the normal thyroid. The ei)ithelium lining the folliclesis cuboidal or somewliat flattened. In the supporting stroma can be seen hereand there islets of similar cells, resembling embryonic thyroidal structure. Thegrowth may be diffuse (colloid struma) or localized and encapsulated. In somecases the colloid increases in amount, the follicles enlarge, the intervening wallsatrophy and rupture, and thus cysts filled with colloid result (cystic goitre).Simple adenomata are usually single, but may be multiple. The fdtal adenomata resemble in structure the fcrtal thyroid. The cells arearranged in solid columns and clusters, in which occasionally minute lumina may. (From tlie autliors collection.) be discovered, but colloid is not present. The tumor is usually encapsulated, iswhitish or reddish in color, and of soft consistence. As a rule it is ciuite vascular.(Fig. lOS.) The papilliferous adenomata usually originate in the walls of old cysts, butvery rarely they are true papilliferous adeno-cystomata, comparable to those ofthe ovary. Adenomata of the suprarenal capsule are quite common, but rarely attain anysize. It is interesting that misplaced suprarenal tissue may give rise to adeno-mata in unlikely situations such as the kidney, peritoneum, and broad ligament. The enlargement of the prostate that so often occurs in old age is due to anovergrowth of the glandular portion, the fibro-nmscular stroma, or both,
