No. 16: Aborrajados at Antojitos Colombianos
"Aborrajado' is quite a mouthful if Spanish isn't your native tongue, but just call these deep-fried treats plantain fritters and you'll have the general idea. At Antojitos Colombianos, tucked into the far corner of a barely noticeable shopping strip at 6625 Leetsdale Drive, the deep fryer roars to life like a jet engine each time an order for aborrajados, empanadas or other crispy appetizers is dropped.

This traditional snack starts with sweet, ripe plantain formed into a ball around guava paste and white cheese. A thin layer of batter adds a flaky shell once fried, while the plantain stays warm and soft. Guava and cheese mingle in the molten center, making for a breakfast-style bite that goes perfectly with a cup of cafe con leche.

"Antojito" is the diminutive of the noun "antojo," which means "desire" or "fancy" — and you'll definitely desire more aborrajados once you've tried your first one. But do yourself a favor and save room for other antojitos at this tiny, family-run eatery, as well as for larger Colombian entrees like bandeja paisa, the national dish consisting of chicharrón, beans, sausage, rice and eggs; mondongo, a hearty soup made with tripe; or sancocho, a chicken stew made with plantain and yuca.
