Centro Comercial Fontanar is a retail project located in Chía, a town located north from Bogotá, specifically 2 kilometers on the Chía – Cajicá highway. The project team selected a very strategic location in terms of public transportation. The location also offers access to a variety of basic services. The LEED project team put a lot of effort into developing and implementing several sustainable strategies for the project. The following are some the most important strategies:
  • Centro Comercia Fontanar has a wonderful water saving strategy. The rainwater is captured from the roof, from where it flows through pipelines into the foundation coffered slab. From there, the water goes into a treatment plant and finally it is pumped to the building’s sanitation equipment. This translates into a 70 percent potable water savings.
  • One hundred percent of the residual water is treated, and then used for irrigation.
  • More than 20 percent of the materials used in the project are locally sourced, which promotes the national market and reduce the impacts produced in product transportation.
  • The project’s lighting system has been carefully optimized to reduce installed lighting power without compromising the comfort of their spaces. It was possible to reduce the mall’s installed lighting power in more than a 25 percent, compared to a conventional similar building. This energy saving was accomplished with the use of high efficiency technologies and a correct lighting distribution within the interior spaces.
  • Mechanical and natural ventilation system that accomplishes the minimum exterior air supply volume established by ASHRAE 62.1 – 2007. This guarantee a better air quality for the occupants and less pollutant accumulation within the building.
