Spanish Verb Cruzar Conjugation

The Spanish verb cruzar means to cross. It is a regular -ar verb, so it follows the same conjugation pattern as other -ar verbs like montar, llamar and bajar. However, when conjugating cruzar, the spelling changes a bit: the "z" becomes a "c" before the vowel "e." This change follows the Spanish rule that forbids the letter combination "ze" (except in proper nouns).

Using the Verb Cruzar 

The verb cruzar can be used in several different ways. It can be used to talk about crossing the street, a river, the ocean, etc. as in Ella cruza la calle con su mamá (She crosses the street with her mom). It can also be used to talk about crossing your fingers, legs, etc., as in Ana cruza las piernas al sentarse (Ana crosser her legs when she sits down). 

When cruzar is used as a reciprocal verb, it can mean to exchange looks, gestures, or words. For example, Solo se cruzaron algunas palabras cuando se vieron (They only exchanged a few words when they saw each other). Finally, cruzar can also be used to talk about running into someone, as in Ayer me crucé con mi vecino en la tienda (Yesterday I ran into my neighbor at the store), or Nos cruzamos cuando íbamos corriendo esta mañana (We crossed each other when we were out running this morning).

In the preterite tense conjugation there is one instance of the spelling change z to c. The first person singular conjugation is crucé with a c, because you cannot have the letter combination ze in Spanish.

Cruzar Imperfect Indicative

There are no spelling changes in the imperfect tense. Two possible translations of the imperfect are "was crossing" or "used to cross."

The conditional tense is used to talk about hypothetical situations or possibilities. In English the conditional is expressed with would + verb.

Cruzar Present Progressive/Gerund Form

Present Progressive of Cruzar: está cruzando

she is crossing -> Ella está cruzando los dedos para tener buena suerte.

Cruzar Past Participle

Present Perfect of Cruzar: ha cruzado 

she has crossed -> Ella ha cruzado los dedos para tener buena suerte. 

Cruzar Present Subjunctive

The present subjunctive conjugation endings of -ar verbs are e, es, e, emos, éis and en. Since they all have the vowel e, there is a spelling change for all of these conjugations; the z changes to c before the e, as shown in the following table: 

Cruzar Imperfect Subjunctive

There are no spelling changes in the imperfect subjunctive. There are two different ways of conjugating the imperfect subjunctive, both considered correct.

Cruzar Imperative 

The imperative mood is for giving commands or orders. Most of the imperative forms also have the spelling change z to c. There are both positive and negative commands, shown in the following tables:
