Tasca d’Almerita’s Etna estate produces this 100% Nerello Mascalese wine. It has a ruby red colour with an orange rim. The nose combines red berry fruits and blood orange peel with mineral sensations, on a delicately spicy and balsamic background, while the mouthfeel is juicy with a lively freshness, a distinct sapidity and nuances of graphite. There is a lot of aromatic definition to the Tenuta Tascante 2017 Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante. The wine reveals a distinct and unique personality, with a slightly higher degree of natural richness, concentration and textural power, which is due to the warm vintage. The vines are planted in eroded volcanic ash and soils, meaning that they have been broken down into ashy dust and smaller particles over the centuries. The bouquet offers red cassis, wild cherry and toasted fennel seed. It should be interesting to see how this lovely wine progresses over time.

The 2017 Contrada Rampante Etna Rosso is stunning from the first tilt of the glass, showing the ripe nature of the vintage, yet balancing it wonderfully against the smoky and savory characteristics of its source. Musky cherries, dried roses, crushed black stone and a complementary hint of charred wood can all be discerned. It’s silky and pliant in feel, with sweet red berries contrasted by zesty acids and minerals. While this may not be a Rampante for long-term cellaring, it still possesses a balanced display of fine tannins that frame the expression well. There’s so much pleasure to be found here today and over the next five to eight years.

High-toned and aromatic, this mouthwatering red offers steeped raspberry and cherry fruit notes that show accents of rosehip, Mandarin orange peel and dried thyme. Light- to medium-bodied, this is defined by sculpted tannins, with a lingering finish of smoky tar and stone. Best from 2022 through 2030. 415 cases made, 150 cases imported.

Mt Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano, is situated on the eastern side of Sicily and is home to some of Italy’s most dramatic wine landscapes. The Etna DOC is divided into 132 Contrade, or wine districts. Each Contrada is characterized by its soil components and the age of the lava formations in the vineyards. Tasca works in four Contrade located on the northern side of Mt. Etna. Contrada Rampante is located between Passopisciaro and Randazzo and is a 4.28 ha vineyard that has large dry-stone wall terraces at an average slope of 4.7% with volcanic formations that date from 4,000 – 15,000 years ago. Contrada Rampante is 100% Nerello Mascalese aged 12 months in 25 hl Slavonia oak casks.

Region: Sicily

The island of Sicily is one of those wine regions which seems to be designed for the production of quality wines. Not only does it have extremely fertile soils, helped by volcanic activity of such peaks as Etna, but the climate is absolutely ideal for the ripening of beautiful grape varietals, with almost year-round sunshine and cooling sea breezes. Sicily has been using such factors for growing grapevines for thousands of years, and is a truly ancient wine region steeped in tradition. Wineries on the island make a wide variety of wines, which are much loved for their ability to express plenty of exciting fruit flavors and sunny, tempting aromas, but Sicily is most well known for the dessert and fortified wines based around the port town of Marsala.

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
