DESCRIPTION OF THE FRUIT

Small, round berry that measures 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter, with an appearance similar to a small tomato, of an orange-yellow color, covered by a kind of “bud” formed by leaves with a texture similar to that of paper. The aguaymanto has an appetizing appearance. It is flavorful and bittersweet, with a rich aroma.

In recent years, the aguaymanto has enjoyed increasing popularity in many countries throughout Europe, as well as the United States, as a major culinary ingredient.

ORIGIN

ITS SCIENTIFIC NAME IS PHYSALIS PERUVIANA, AND IT FORMS PART OF THE SOLANACEAE FAMILY.

This herbaceous plant grows in warm, dry areas near the Andes, and is native to South America. It grew wild in great abundance in the territory of the Inca Empire, for which reason it formed part of the Incas’ diet.

It is also know in some regions of Peru by the name of capulí or tomatito silvestre, and around the world as golden berry.
