The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA)

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia works with people in poverty and distress to create just and positive change through empowering partnerships and responsible action.

ADRA works with governments, organisations and communities to empower people and provide opportunities for them to thrive. We engage in development projects and emergency management activities across Australia, the Pacific, Asia and Africa.

ADRA works to alleviate human suffering without regard to ethnic, racial, political or religious association.

Overseas ADRA focuses on:

  • promoting inclusion and wellbeing by ensuring that men, women, girls and boys have equal opportunity, mutual respect, supportive relationships and a sense of connection with their communities. We have a particular focus on addressing gender-based violence.
  • supporting sustainable food production through improved technologies that enhance the ability to produce sufficient annual harvest for families to feed themselves without degrading their land. ADRA is particularly focused on climate-smart agriculture to achieve sustainable increases in food productivity.
  • creating livelihood opportunities that provide people with diverse means to support themselves and their families for improved quality of life. ADRA focuses on livelihood resilience to enable people to anticipate, organize for and adapt to change.
  • responding to disasters in partnership with the global ADRA network to protect lives during natural or slow-onset disasters and ensuring communities are better prepared for future disasters. We focus on protection, ensuring the most vulnerable are kept from further harm.

In Australia ADRA focuses on:

  • building community by creating opportunities for people to connect and work together for mutual benefit.
  • providing support services to ensure those experiencing crisis have the support they need to move toward independence.
  • creating livelihood opportunities through training and support for people striving to build a financially stable future, particularly migrants and indigenous Australians.
  • responding to disasters by forming strategic partnerships and equipping volunteers with the knowledge and skills they need to support affected people.

ADRA Australia is a member of the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) and has full accreditation with the Australian Government.
