One of the most monumental moments of my career: delivering a lecture at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)! This past October, I found myself at the heart of innovation - the MIT Stata Center. This architectural marvel, a beacon at the "crossroads of dreams and reality", a place that "defies categorization", mirrors the essence of my own journey. The invitation to speak at MIT came directly as a result of my TED talk "Invest Like a Girl." Interestingly, my talk had garnered less than 2,000 views. Yet, it serves as a powerful reminder that impact isn't solely measured by numbers. It’s about reaching those who share your vision and can help magnify your message. In this case, it was an audience of the globe's most brilliant minds - professors, scientists, researchers, and practitioners from MIT and around the world. Despite having been on stage more than 2,000 times, this unique challenge and privilege of addressing such a distinguished gathering filled me with a profound sense of responsibility and anticipation. The butterflies in my stomach were an exhilarating reminder of the significance of this moment. The MIT's halls, known for fostering groundbreaking ideas and nurturing Nobel laureates, became the backdrop to my own voice (!) - a voice advocating for a seismic shift towards a gender-balanced ecosystem in entrepreneurship and angel investing. This was not just another lecture. It was the culmination of years of dedication to education and empowerment, a dream realized in the most spectacular fashion. The greatest gift of all was sharing this unparalleled experience with my husband and children. Having their unwavering support and encouragement when I needed it the most, and celebrating this success together, was exceptional. Experiencing this pinnacle moment alongside my family, witnessing our shared values being recognized on such a significant stage, was indeed a highlight of my professional and personal journey. 🎓👀 Did you find your time in college/university valuable? It's a tricky question, but personally, I had no clue what I wanted to do after graduation. However, what I didn't want to do was crystal clear to me, and that realization helped me a lot. Last week, I had the extraordinary opportunity to contribute insights on team dynamics for the Aspiring Campus Entrepreneurs program (ACE) at Toronto Metropolitan University. This program connects aspiring researchers with TMU students interested in bringing innovative ideas to life as commercial startups. Through this program, students form multi-disciplinary teams, learn entrepreneurial skills, evaluate commercial potential and pathways for a venture, and work with emerging innovation. I was thrilled to facilitate a powerful experiential learning exercise reinforcing themes of high-performing teams, including identifying and navigating operational constraints, effective communication, customer/user focus, cross-functional design, velocity of value, and Intelligent Process Automation (IPA). This experience reminded me why I enjoy working with young talent - the corporate world hasn't yet corrupted them! They think critically and challenge the status quo without hesitation, which fuels my passion for mentorship.
