"Sustaining our Natural Capital"

About us

Established in September 2012, the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) is a regional Environmental Fund whose objective is to provide a sustainable flow of resources to support activities that contribute substantially to the conservation, protection and maintenance of biodiversity in the Caribbean. The CBF mobilises resources and channels support to partners and projects. Currently, the CBF manages approximately USD 70 million through 2 financial instruments: The Endowment Fund With about USD 43 million, the endowment is a permanent funding source to the National Conservation Trust Funds (NCTFs), who in turn lead grant-making programs at the national level. One of the CBF’s endowment key principles is that national partner funds must create sustainable finance mechanisms to trigger a minimum of 1:1 match to the CBF endowment resources. The revenue sources can be private and/or public. Donors to date include the Government of Germany through the German Development Bank (KfW), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) — through the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) — and The Nature Conservancy. The EbA Facility With about USD 26.5 million, this is a sinking fund to provide resources directly to selected national and regional projects on Ecosystem-based Adaptation to climate change. The EbA Facility funded projects will be selected by a technical committee (the EbA Committee) in a competitive basis, through Calls for Proposals that will start to be launched in 2018. The fund initial donation was fully contributed by Government of Germany through the German Development Bank (KfW) and has an estimated duration of 5 years. The CBF continues to raise non-permanent and permanent funding to bring on additional countries and for regional conservation and sustainable development actions.

  • The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) joins in observing International Day for Biodiversity under the theme “Be Part of the Plan”. This is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The Caribbean stands out as a globally renowned biodiversity hotspot, with its coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, tropical rainforests and unique fauna. These ecosystems not only protect Caribbean coastlines from tropical storms and erosion but also serve as a critical source of food and jobs for local communities. The CBF aims to provide sustainable financing that protects and conserve biodiversity at scale within the region. To date, the CBF has disbursed over US$30 million to 105 sustainable development projects in 14 Caribbean countries that positively impacts more than 30,000 people. With more strategic partnerships and increased resource mobilization, the CBF will continue to work towards a vision of a Caribbean where both nature and people thrive. • Recently, the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) and Canada celebrated one year of implementation of the Caribbean Organizations for a Resilient Environment (CORE) Project at a Feature Event held in Jamaica. Regional partners and other specially invited guests gathered to recognize this partnership between the CBF and Canada. High Commissioner of Canada to Jamaica Emina Tudakovic, in her remarks at the event, congratulated the CBF for advancing climate action and gender equality in the Caribbean through the CORE Project. In its first year, CORE made significant strides and by June 2024, National Conservation Trust Funds (NCTFs) across the region will have support from Canadian volunteers and training in key areas such as financial and grant management. From 2023 to 2027, the CORE Project is expected to provide grants for projects, technical assistance and capacity building to 40 organizations focused on gender-responsive climate actions across the region. CORE is a regional project financed by Canada (CAD 8M) and implemented by the CBF, aimed at driving inclusive and gender-responsive climate action in eight target countries; Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname. The project is a demonstration of Canada's support to the Caribbean in addressing the climate crisis by protecting more biodiversity, and improving climate resilience and disaster preparedness across the region using a gender-responsive approach. The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) is a vital ally to the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), united in our mission to foster sustainable tourism across our region. We had the privilege of welcoming Frank Comito, former CHTA Director General at #STC2024 in Grenada. His passion for the Caribbean’s advancement was evident during this interview, where he shared insights on the significance of partnerships and corporate social responsibility. He also fondly recalled the legacies of tourism trailblazers Warren Binder and John Bell, who recently passed. Our deepest gratitude to Frank for highlighting the power of collaboration and to Warren and John for their exceptional impact on Caribbean tourism.
