GREAT CLASSY OLD-SCHOOL SPANISH FOUGÉRE

"La Esencia de Loewe" is very masculine and sexy. It's the scent my wife prefers on me, together with BOSS Number ONE and YSL Sauvage Elixir.
My impressions are a result of testing the previous reformulation that uses a green fat bottle with a big golden cap. The newest reformulation comes in a rectangular flask with a brownish colour and a wooden cap. Both reformulations feature a bottle size I enjoy: 150ml. It allows me to be generous whenever I apply it.
Although the complexity and notes are different, this fragrance reminds me of "For Him" by Narciso Rodriguez, and both are aromatic fougéres. They do share some darkness as well but of different types. While "For Him" suggests a wet and dark twisty road, "Esencia" surrounds you with juniper, oakmoss and vetiver from an old gloomy forest.
It attracts several compliments from the ladies and a bit of envy from the men. I always thought (and still do) this perfume to be too green to receive a lot of praise, especially from the feminine noses. I guess I have been wrong all the time. Even nowadays, this old-timer attracts a lot of compliments. Loewe has always been a brand with not a lot of acceptance, probably due to its pricing, usually a bit on the high side for a designer brand. However, its products have always been above average as well.
It perspires pure old-school gentlemen's class. It's a complex perfume with all notes, and phases, very well mastered in a homogeneous blending.
I consider it one of my all-time favourites and I wear it all year, day and night. Well... not really during the cold winter days.
Performance is quite above average. Projection is powerful in all the development stages.

My opinion: It's old school, meaning manly, powerful, green and gloomy; it's a real pine forest scent and projects like a beast. Try before you buy.

№1 fragrance in journey of finding perfect coniferous scent like boclets fir balsam opening.

To begin with, it just feels to me like drakkar noirs opening, but lavander switched to pine needle.
•No, oak moss there isn't sharp and brings right amount of soapiness
•Doesn't feel urinal or old school for me
•A bit over smoothed, hard to pick up most notes.
•WOULD NOT GET COMPLIMENTS.Argument: When my friend smelled it, his reaction was "Do you have good fragrances?" Or something like that.So he doesn't like it, and associated it with soap on gas station
•Suitable for warm weather

You will get a similar dense green scent to that of my beloved Polo Green in the opening. But it's more like a cousin scent than actually being a spot on dupe. Unfortunately, this quickly goes into a different direction of a unique scent and then even quicklier fades into nothingness. I think this experience lasted about maybe 30 minutes on my arm and then I couldn't detect a trace of aroma from the spot I sprayed.

And yes, I made up a word there...

I’m not sure what to say
I had different opinions and experiences with this scent that I don’t have a stable idea about it and personally I don’t give any fragrance a lot of time to assess the scent
At first it seemed gorgeous I believe it excels in extra cold weather if you can believe it
And I had a very good Time wearing it
when the weather got warmer I found myself not enjoying it as much
And so does the fabric of the clothes I wear usually does effect the overall experience
Some fabrics bring it to life others kill the scent so hard that I can’t enjoy it
What I concluded is it’s a special fragrance it’s not unique or one of a kind but it’s definitely special
The bottom line is if you like manly green scents you will appreciate it

Stubby bottle. First impression (so-called maceration be damned). Nice fragrance. Yes, it is comparable to the green Polo. No one is imagining that, or being blindly misled by the colour coding that manufacturers have been using for decades. Still, probably most of the resemblance is in the opening stages, and even then this smells more uniformly green than the Polo, or at least the bottle of Polo I've had for maybe eight or nine years. This is conifer green the way I seem to remember myself finding Polo to be conifer green the first time I sprayed it.

This is probably more restrained or civilised, in that it doesn't have any ashtray or ballsy leather or pissy chypre thing going on on the same scale as Polo. This is quite mossy and soapy with some throaty powder in the opening, and there is a kind of animalic layer to all that, but the fragrance calms down quite quickly and is very soon if not immediately much less assertive than Polo. It veers off in its own aromatic direction. It still has depth though. Stuff like the styrax? Yeah, nice touch.

I suppose the greenness has to remind me of the green Jaguar too, but I don't find this as dated as the Jag. (What's wrong with complicated fragrances, by the way? You people never heard of Coco Chanel?!) This may be one of those fragrances that's almost so refined and modest that I struggle to form an opinion as to whether I find it outdated or not. I really don't think I do. I might if I used it too liberally and ended up feeling as if someone had attacked me with a powder fire extinguisher.

Either way, this is not hypermasculine to me. (My dad trying his best to use up a whole can of Brut after every bath--now, that was hypermasculine!) Yeah, sure, it's masculine, but it doesn't make me feel like Tony Montana, or John Travolta in a disco suit. It doesn't make me feel as if I ought to be chopping down trees. It perhaps does make me think to myself that--trees are great, aren't they? Snow-topped conifers in still forests? With maybe the odd red squirrel running about? Great. I'm all for trees. We should all be all for trees.

A valid alternative to Polo--more "wearable", though certainly presentable--except maybe if you're a manly manly man's man and planning to head out into the Scottish Highlands to kill a king stag with your bare hands or something.

@chopps007 Loewe is a Spanish Brand part of LVMH , they are quite big in Europe and recently changed all their bottles to these big glass ones to homogenise. If you like them, Try the latest flankers like Solo Atlas, Solo Mercurio and 7 Cobalt (imho hidden gems outside Spain, reaching niche quality at designer prices).

chopps007

Unreal. I’d describe myself as a collector. I buy a different scent practically every day. This one is honestly so good. Loewe have a number of amazing scents and hardly anyone knows about them. I nearly didn’t write this review as it is so good I kind of want to gatekeep it but I’m afraid they’d discontinue it if people don t buy it so I’m sharing. It’s better than 2012 Aventus. Those who know, know.

LeSmeller

This is an old school aromatic-sour-woody scent with floral aspects. It's pretty good, would be even better if it were less aromatic and maybe less sour. It's extremely aromatic/spicy, disturbing and uneasy. Brutal masculinity. I find the soft side of this perfume more interesting.

Tone it down a bit, let the flowers come out. Less lavender, less pine, relax. It's not an action movie, you don't need every possible ingredient. As it is, the scent is very cramped and tightly packed. It's like a wall of notes. It's like they combined Chanel Egoiste and Platinum Egoiste, which are rather different scents. The end result is sharp and aggressive, which smells weird with the florals. Wear this if you want to smell like you wear three different perfumes at the same time.

This is a perfume for survivalists. There's no extra space in your underground bunker. You can only take one bottle with you, so you take one that has all possible notes in it. For bonus points get the version that is green and shaped like a hand grenade.

If you like gin, you will like the scent, as juniper is very noticeable. The performance is good. Overall I like this fragrance because it's pretty original among today's perfumes.

In a good way, reminds of those light and dark green olives with a sour/bitter note in the heart maybe the combination of pine/juniper. Not for modern sweet perfume lovers but 8/10 for me.

I used to wear the classic round small bottle version for many years. Amazing durability ,high quality perfume at least for my taste a person from the era of 70's 80's . I went to buy it again....but this time is only exist the new modern version with the tall bottle.....unfortunately I have to say that the perfume is not exactly the same as before.....I can imagine a kind of REFORMETION but I am not sure....for me it does not smell the same. So be careful!!

Esencia pour Homme Loewe 🌲🎩🌿

Review based in the vintage bottle, the green rounded shape.

A flashback memories puller to the golden years of the perfumer; an OLD SCHOOL powerhouse in every aspect.

It feels very handcrafted: natural and good quality.

Highly GREENISH… like been in a cabin into a deep CONIFEROUS FOREST. Adding that the WOODSY note is prominent.

People who were born in the 70s or 80s probably will enjoy it since it’s a contemporary of the classics POLO GREEN AND PACO RABANNE POUR HOMME.

Lavender? Yes a lot. In fact I get images of gentlemen dressed with polyester suits and leather hats being shaved in an old barbershop while discussing Ronald Reagan's administration.

Definitely not for most of the millennial guys, they could compare ESENCIA to the uncles smell.

Mature, elegant to be wore in formal occasions during the cooler nights of the year.

Man. So many folks use bottle color as a way to compare scent. This doesn't smell like polo green or jaguar for men. If anything, it shares notes with Platinum Egoist. Where thos is darker and less soapy. But that green note profile is similar between those two. Imo

I came across this one last week and tried it on a whim in a shop I usually don't frequenty. What can you say about a 1988 release that's green and coniferous, with 30 plus notes, extremely complex and a fougere!? I confess I tested this with the EDp side by side in my arm, and the EDP had a much nicer opening. But 10 minutes in I was loving the classic EDT. The current formulation is not beastly but has everything I want in a classic men's scent. Oakmoss, green, pine, vetiver, ooohhh! Does this compare to today's Sauvage in cultural relevancy? Who cares. I say that is like comparing apples to oranges. And since when do I enjoy being culturally relevant? A classic masterpiece that I will be adding to my collection soon once the temps dip a bit. A solid 3 season scent here in the Northern Hemisphere. They don't make them like they used to.

Mr.SmellgoodTX

I ordered what I thought was going to be the classic bottle version of this, but ended up with the new modern bottle. On first spray, wow strong and green. It is honestly a little challenging in the opening, but it does become more pleasant as it settles down. As others have said, this has fall and winter written all over it, you can get away with this on the colder days of spring, but it is just too strong in my opinion for warmer days. Classic scent all the way through, not for those seeking fresh or modern.

Not_So_Perfumy

First time I smelled it(2023), and this smells like an indie perfume; something Tauer & Co would offer.
Very green, balsamic, conifer; something most people would call "dark", but it's not too dark.
Impressive, especially for the price!
With all of that being said, it's a bit too much for me personally, but I can see it working for someone very manly of a certain age.

DonRivella

If I did not just read that this was launched in 1988, I would have guessed this was a modern release that pays homage to 80ies fragrances. I can of course be that what I perceive as modern is due to reformulations, as I never smelled a vintage bottle.
In any case, I like this a lot, a whole lot. Classy, manly, mature, bold without being overpowering. I don't get half the notes listed above, mainly pine, lavender and woods, some muted citruses in the opening, some geranium and a hint of absinthe plus flowers (plus some musk to hold it together). I am surprised that it took me so long to discover this beauty. Performance is very solid. If you like vintage men's fragrances, I would highly recommend that you get your nose on this one.

aqua_de_la_vita

THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON THE ORGINAL VERSION.
Where do I start, omg this juice is perfect for the fall-winter. A real spicey fougere with a slight intoxicating smokey leathery vib. There's a real herbal base of oakmoss and lavender which brings out the best of the other notes as they mingle together on my skin.
When I smell this juice, I think of a the classic "Gone with wind". As Clarke Gable and his masculinity attracts Vivian Leigh. Clarke is dressed up in his tailored suit, and smelling so good wearing Esencia.
Longevity and Sillage is excellent, lasts well past 6hrs on me.
If you enjoy a real spicey fougere with pine needles and fur with a smokey leathery vib..this juice is worth acquiring. 8.5/10

jlewis123

I do not understand the comparison to Polo other than the color scheme of the original bottle. Both fragrances transport me to lush-damp forest, but they do it in very different ways. Polo is the scent of forest floor in late Autumn whereas this is the scent of winter air amongst high altitude evergreens. Polo is dense whereas this is much lighter in structure and feel.

I have both a vintage sample and a newer version in the Dark green frosted glass bottle. I can't say what this smelled like in 1988, but both of mine smell very similar to my nose. This scent is very unique and yet familiar and I like it very much. It smells sweeter and a bit cleaner than other piney-mossy fougeres in my opinion.

With that being said, I must warn those unfamiliar that the opening can be a bit off-putting. In both versions I own, something in the top notes comes off a bit sour. Kind of like when a fragrance is starting to turn. Almost like a wet mop or towel, but that does dissipate within a few minutes of wear and becomes a very nice clean aromatic green soapy scent.

This one doesn't stick to skin very well but really radiates on a sweater or scarf.

I purchased an older non-vintage bottle from eBay that wasn't too expensive. I don't think I'd pay over $100 for it unless it was a well maintained vintage and there were significant improvements over the bottle I have.

jimiray69

Layer this with Creed Original Vetiver. Just do it.

fromthebayandaroundtheway

Fougeres are easily my favorite type of fragrance to wear. This is a problem, simply because there are so many damn good fougeres out there to try. Does Loewe Esencia standout? Hell yes! For the simple reason we stay on the upper end of the stem of the fern; Loewe Esencia is so perfectly green.
The first spray vaults us to great heights (think leafy green tree tops) with a smooth lavender and a beautiful pine note, some tarragon and petitgrain and the smallest bit of basil. The extra fresh and herbal opening gives way to a spicy mid that gets slightly soapy.(that nutmeg note is so good!) The florals float in with a nice rose and jasmine that get a minty fresh push from the geranium. The base runs sweet and slightly earthy with some tonka, vetiver and patchouli. As for the dry down, imagine an artisanal shaving soap that was kissed with the slightest bit of incense. This is standard Loewe: rich, bold and beautiful.
I get a solid performance from this fragrance; a good 6 hours. Esencia stays close to the skin and that's fine by me. This is a fragrance that can be worn inside or outside the office. Perfect for cooler weather, so think autumn through spring. To me Esencia lends more to day wear and is for the 30 and up crowd. Give Loewe Esencia a few sprays when you need a green, fresh reminder of spring during a dry and chilly autumn day.

resweetened

I spent seven years searching for this fragrance, my signature fragrance, the one I default to on fussy days or when I am short of time. The one I buy two bottles at a time. I could smell it in my mind's nose, a dry evergreen smoothness, but a hybrid evergreen in which no single note could be discerned. Evergreen almost as an ideal to which to aspire. Masculine yet somehow beautiful. My first whiff of Esencia my eyes grew big as saucers. I found it.

Esencia is beautiful, masculine, evergreen, dry, masterful and long-lasting. If they ever stop making it I will cry.

MrHonest

Just picked up the newest version pictured above - tall military green bottle with the faux wooden cap. This is quite different from Polo. Whereas Polo has that ashy-peppery tobacco, dark eugenol-leather and barbershop rose-amber combo, Esencia is like an explosion of green sparkles and sour juniper. Wayyyyyyy more piney than Polo. Wayyyyy more. In fact, it's basically all pine in the mid and it's a PROPER pine. Almost photo realistic. On a backbone of rather basic soft, herbal oakmoss. Polo is almost sweet by comparison. But if ever there was a green fragrance, this is it.

The closest thing I can compare it to is the fizzy green opening 20 minutes of Bogart Signature that I always wished lasted longer. This fragrance does exactly that - cranks the juniper and galbanum up to 11 and keeps it pumpin' for the whole show. Really feels like it's all bright green top notes that turn into a fizzy, juniper soap. But that's the thing - it's a sour juniper and not the resinous sappy kind. Just a heads up.

The opening is easily my favourite part though. The notes weren't kidding about that tinge of lavender at the top. Then it mysteriously vanishes within 15 minutes. :S No woody backbone nor real leather to my nose. Not exactly vintage smelling, but not modern either. Hard to pin it. No barbershop lavender in the mid, and it's less soapy than Sung Homme. Vibes of Paco Rabanne Pour Homme for sure but mostly that early stage of Bogart Signature.

Overall, it's more natural smelling than synthetic imo, and the performance on the newest stuff ain't bad. Definitely need to be careful on the trigger around people who don't care for hyper green soapy fragrances. The projection isn't beastly, but in a pinch it can be like walking into a wall of pine needles. BAM!! I feel like the bottle is a bit too dark to represent the scent too. Completely opaque, but they really should have made it the same colour as Banana Republic's Grassland. That's the vibe I get. Herbal pine-in-yo-FACE. Delightful, if that's what you're looking for. Superb for the autumn and spring and potentially a great "wake-up" fragrance with that green kick. Probably would layer well with a lemony citrus, vetiver, or straight up virginian cedar. Atlas cedar could be too dark. Just some ideas. For me, it's a win.

Update: Just had my niece and nephew over. Had my bottle sitting on my desk so of course they had to spray it while I wasn't there. lol Came back into the room and thought, "did I just spray Polo?" Yup. I get it now. In the sillage, it can come off as the sillage of the modern, neutered formulation of Polo. Bam.

Scent - 8.5/10
Longevity - 7/10
Projection - 7/10
Overall - 8/10

This may be one of the best things I’ve ever smelled in my life. To me, it smells like Polo Green and Drakkar Noir fused together in the best way possible. I’m blown away.

kxowledge

Love the base of oak, oss, but hate the rest. Smells like dirt. I hate the juniper berries outside of fragrances and also in fragrances. It’s an interesting fougere perfume which reminds me of a forest, but not in a pleasant way.

Shugenja

I have the 90s bottle with smooth oak moss base that is so good. The modern version is so thin in comparison. The old version is so complex and well blended. It is a marvel and cannot be missed. It is now EXTREMELY expensive, but amazing. So good.

Aguirre

What a promising opening! Masculine, green, bold, bright, lively, aromatic, citrusy, leafy, resinous, lavandery, camphorous, musky, leathery, etc. Everything you may not have known you needed. Classic.

Such a shame it all loses its "essence" and character after a bit, only to become a very soft, messy, forgettable, shaving foam-like, dreary remnant of the stunner Loewe Esencia could have been.

Esencia Loewe pour homme...

...I was eying out this fragrance for a while now and now that I've got it I'm annoyed at myself for not having bought it so much earlier.

I'm not that kind of person who throws around statements such as "best ever", "best of" ," top three", "best of its kind" because i firmly believe that each and every perfumer puts his or her best effort and knowledge into every single one of their creations. So it would be unfair to other green creations if go over board with praise for this Loewe's creation.

I do believe however, that ELPH is a very special kind of green fragrance and I'm very happy that it is still with us.

Imagine yourself anchored in a green luscious forest and all of a sudden you are part of a time lapse experience in where you go through spring, summer and autumn of that forest.

Spring opens with a very fresh green blast with a minty touch created by the Artemesia and the grassy green of Galbanum. It is a nice crisp green.

Summer follows with a deeper and less crisp green with the warmth of Geranium and very soft floral touches supporting the green pine elephant in the room. The florals warm up the green a bit.

Autumn shows up after a while where dry woods and a herbal touch support the pine and fir to signal this fragrant year is nearly over.
The green and herbal touches follow through all the way.

The only criticism i have are the new bottles.
Luckily I managed to get my hands on that round deep dark green opaque glass bottle and from a business point of view it certainly makes sense to only produce one bottle shape in different colors and sizes with one identical wooden cap and basic labels but i think LOEWE should consider to keeping the original bottle shapes at least for their most iconic fragrances.

Old Spice and Tabac are examples of porcelain bottles still being produced....as iconic as those scents. I know Procter&Gamble changed the porcelain bottle of Old Spice to plastic but Mäurer & Wirtz didn't for Tabac.

Loewe Esencia....three seasons in a forest in a bottle.
It is a must for anybody who loves green scents.
No, in fact it is a must for every collection.

shravanbendapudi

Imagine all the ingredients were kept in containers around this large cauldron brought out to prepare a rich and complex mixture of the many many notes indicated above. Then imagine a cat walked on that shelf and all the containers fell into the cauldron, breaking and mixing up. That's what this fragrance smells like - complete chaos. It isn't a composition, it's a concoction. It's like of Roja's parfum colognes went from their jazz roots and turned punk. It's everything, all at once, altogether. And it is all of that in the best way possible. I've smelt many perfumes - but very few quite as unique yet pleasing as this one - pleasing being the key word. It is not challenging to appreciate or difficult to wear. Even to this day. It is all things to all men - except during the very high summer heat :)... This sits on my shelf as a unique designer along with Narciso Rodriguez For Him - unique versatiles that show that you don't have to be safe like all the blue fragrances out there to be easy to wear...

04/2020 Batch. At first I didn't really like it much. After a couple days of using it, it grew into me but not as much to say "I love it". Maybe because I have only tested in summer. Green, soapy, a little bit powdery. Overall a really CLEAN fragrance. I do not find it similar to Polo Green (classic). Polo has a more prominent woody note. Loewe, while woody, it is "greener". The pine/oakmoss combo overpowers that dry wood note.

In short words: green classy soap.

6.5/10 to me. I will be

This fragrance entered the world when I was 10, and I had never heard of it until recently. Was hunting around for something to try and a friend suggested this. I'm glad he did.

This is a gorgeous aromatic fougere. Lots of fresh green notes. The pine and fir really stand out for me. It definitely has a classic feel to it, but it isn't dated. I didn't feel like I was wearing my dad's or my grandpa's cologne. It doesn't scream 1980s at all. It is mature. It's gentlemanly. It's classy in a way that tells the world you're also casual. It hints at something rustic and manly without slapping you in the face with its masculinity.

Very nice. Very clean. Very sorry it took me 32 years to discover this one.

FirstSense

This is a true gem and a masterpiece. But I'am talking about the original 1988 formulation. The newest edition in the sleek design bottle above is different especially in the opening. After around 30 years I can exactly remember how it smells. Unfortunately the new formulated edition starts with a weak watery synthetic citrus smell that is not refreshing at all. The drydown has the original DNA. But I am glad I could purchase the original Esencia in the cute green round bottle with the golden cap presented in a lovely box with the vern leave as a symbol for one of the best green aromatic fougere fragrances ever created. It's so good right from the start. Green, fresh, spicy and herbal. Very uplifting and refreshing. It stays like that for at least an hour. Then the true magic happens. The green aromatic spices and flowers take over and a calming very natural almost healing scent surrounds your body and keeps you in that energetic mode for hours. It's a good but not beastly performing eau de toilette so you can spray generously. It's like walking through a fresh pine forrest where the rain has stopped and a gentle sunshine is appearing through the top of the trees. The complexity is amazing and the designer has made such a perfect blend of the more than 30 mentioned notes that this scent keeps that fascinating character. Old school Spanish perfumery that led to timeless masterpieces like Aqua Brava, Quorum and Heno De Pravia. Esencia is for me the crown on that great perfume and cologne tradition from the Iberian Peninsula. I am so glad I got this old school gem on time and wil treasure it like a jewel.

jarped

I think I finally remembered where I smelled this before! Blue Dobbel Dusch by Nivea :D Of course Esencia has more depth and I still love it, but the opening has had me wondering for a long time. Actually, I think finally getting to put this question to rest allows me to appreciate it even more.

It's 17 degrees celsius and raining right now and I'm really enjoying laying here in a soapy bubble of smelly goodness.

calitrav

In line with a number of reviewers below, I agree this classic fougere is still a good and complex piney green outdoorsy fragrance, but it seems a bit "thin" and I suspect the current formula has suffered a bit from reformulations and EU bans on oakmoss etc.

I'm not sure why there's a new picture of the bottle (brown and rectangular), but for what it's worth last year's bottles were the big fat green ones with gold caps you can currently see on eBay.

eringreene1966

Strong piney, resiny, bug spray blast at the beginning, followed by a deep, fresh Irish Spring-y scent. I almost compare it to Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, which I love, but Esencia has a sharp plasticky odor that I find off-putting. I had to shower it off after about an hour.

Aroma Bob

Reminds me of RL polo but not exactly. This is green and fresh. Very complex and non offensive. Found out about it through Sebastian, fantastic blind buy. I recommend highly

Vitriol08

Amazing one!
I rarely buy designer scents anymore but i got this one as it got good reviews and was assimilated to the original Polo.
It is really awesome and unique!
It is not like Polo as it has a different bend.
It is a little deeper but shares this cypress, pine, fir with a very nice soapy note.
My wife really likes it too. I don t care for compliments but if my wife likes it, it is an extra bonus! :-)

Masterpiece.

AMajeedQT

A classic fougere.

Clean, barabershopy sharp-lavender and green-oakmoss/basil/fir/pine trees smell.

Like something from the 60s/70e.

Similar theme to Polo Green, Tom Ford Beau de Jour, Davidoff Zino, & so one.

Very mature, clean sharp scent, suitable more for the warmer days.

"Like" and pass.

Vapor Trail

Extremely wearable '80s fragrance, doesn't smell dated whatsoever. It's extremely fresh in a green sort of way with pine and fir ultimately being the strongest notes.

Now I'm not usually a member of the reformulation police and I never smelled the original version of Esencia, but it does seem like the current version is missing some of the notes listed. It's not completely linear but I don't get the depth that the massive note pyramid would suggest.

Even so, it's a gorgeous fragrance, masculine and classic. If you're an outdoorsy person this would be a great fit for you.

nguyenvuhungvuong

Green and fresh. Very nice !!

DrNDJas

Glorious green fougere.
Esencia is a soft, beautifully blended coniferous scent with a masculine heart. The florals blend with the greenery to create that soapy dry down, but it’s an herbal, luxury soap that smells clean and refreshing. I love pine/fir fragrances, and this is one of the great ones. In the version I have, the sillage is moderate but it lasts through the workday with 4-6 sprays. However much I love this version, I can tell there is something either missing or replaced in the note breakdown, no doubt the real oakmoss. This must have been a real beauty pre-reformulation! Still, even with a bit of that depth absent, Esencia is a fine fragrance in its current version...well, the one that reads:
Esencia
Loewe
on the bottle. There are a few versions circulating right now.
If you love green fougeres, this should go on your list of things to try.

SocialAssassin

I just bought a bottle. Its so soothing, herbal and delightful. An absolute joy to wear. Pure elegant green freshness. There's different bottles I've noticed, so I went with the one my sample displayed on the card. The word "Esencia" with Loewe underneath it. Similar to AdP Colonia Club but the prominent mint note is replaced by leather.

SocialAssassin

Esencia is an elegant, soft green, herbal and mossy fougere with chypre characteristics. I love the herbal composition and soft leather that circulates around soft lavender before drying down to mossy woods. Its green, refreshing, and natural smelling. Unfortunately, it does not last on my skin. I'm getting roughly 4 hours of out it. But can't complain much because the price is just right. I'd love to try the vintage.

Old School Tie

Used to love it but all 1980s green-dominant frags with an oakmoss underpinning have been eviscerated. Perhaps if you never knew the earlier incarnations you would love this, for the rest of us, however........

Bigsby

Anyone who wants to experience this beuty a la old formula style should have a look at Divain 012. It is a spanish perfume clone house and their version has 2 types of evernia (oak moss) oils and smells heavenly. Better than the current house formula by a long shot.
Thank me later.

dmd63

Great scent from this house.

This one is another touchdown from Loewe, but it could better projection.

For me, it´s a greenish aromatic scent, that gets water in my mouth.

Good longevity and moderate sillage.

Must be applied more often if one wants projection

Yup$ki

Wow I remember having a sample of this at around the age of 10 which my aunt gifted me along with a handful of others that are all long gone. It was my favorite and was also piney like the legendary RL Polo Green. Didn’t think much at all at that age but my cultured nose likes the LE better these days.
So, actually reunited with a great one here also slightly reminds of Herbissimo..could pass for an edp of it so a keeper in my collection. I always love a good pine scent but it’s gotta be done right. For such a great scent quality is tops across the board!

MARTIN SR

This is the manifestation of masculinity and perfectly executed piece of art. Timeless.

Phantomias

A deeply green scent in an attractive green bottle, E. is bracing like a winter walk in the woods. Sharp conifer scents mingle with aromatic notes. Moderate sillage/lasting power.
Vintage E. is a lovely masculine scent. I'm not familiar with the reformulation, the old version is good as it is.

LordCharfield

It’s not discontinued. I’ve just literally got home from Tenerife. It’s 351am (UK), and we flew just after 9pm (Canary islands are on the same time line as U.K.), having sprayed this at the airport store! Long lasting and lovely, green minty sophisticated vibe.
Update 5-6 weeks later I received my own bottle. I was very disappointed as my first impressions were very different from those experienced with the airport tester including a very poor longevity. I have erased and replaced what followed next, rather than leave up an incorrect and unintentionally unfair appraisal of this fragrance.
I assume that some of the initial spray had gone stale in the sprayer tube and this was what I got.
Subsequent wearings have been far more successful and have drawn compliments. The bottle can be seen fairly frequently on my “wearing today” indicator on Fragrantica.
That said, it’s expensive and there are other fragrances that do a similar job such as Polo. I have a wardrobe far more expansive than my Fragrantica wardrobe suggests, so I won’t be rushing to purchase another bottle anytime soon.

Morgoth01

The vintage Esencia is a true masterpiece. It was probably the finest and the most sophisticated green scent ever produced. It's so rich and so natural. Smells like deep dark enchanted forest. The overall effect of its complex blend is simply stunning.

Unfortunately the current formula is nothing but a watery citrus scent. Why Loewe decided to reformulate a gem like Esencia is beyond me.

Nose behind the perfume is Olivier Cresp. I could be wrong though

UsetheSchwartz

Tried this from a sample vial...it smells like what I'd envision The Brawny paper towel guy would wear. Or someone that wants to ooze living in the woods and wearing flannel. It's OK, kinda fresh, definitely pine and fir trees. I wouldn't sport this in public. Or in private. Or on a date. Or when I'm flying solo. Hmmm. Guess it's just not something I like

boozer

To fully appreciate this great frangrance get the vintage bottles and skip the actual version which is a pale representation.

MrAbbas

I liked it. Smells masculine and well put together, but some women around me hated it.

Shugenja

Agreed. I bought a new bottle and YUCK!!
Sharp, nasty, and makes my tongue burn. Just horrible.

The creamy complexity is completely gone. No oakmoss. Just castrated.

I would like my money back for this murder of a masterpiece.

Please understand. This is not a reformulation where the longevity and sillage suffer while it still smells good.
This reformulation has beastly sillage and longevity, yet simply smells really bad.

lukemosse

Killed by reformulation, genuinely. RIP Esencia.

lukemosse

Just bought a 150ml bottle after finishing (and loving) a 5ml sample.

What a disappointment - the bottle is nothing like it.

The bottle is legit from a large retailer, but the scent is very different.
The green heart is almost absent. What is going on Loewe?

I had one spray left from my sample, sitting now with a spray on each arm. One has great projection - excellent bright green notes and very complex.

The other (the 150ml bottle) is dull, no green character, no projection, all basenotes and pepper. How disappointing!

Ahmetkd

lukemosse

Really love this fragrance. I found out about it by successively selecting my favourite notes on the 'Perfumes' tab here, until only one fragrance remained.

I don't think I've worn another fragrance so much and I own about 170-180 samples and bottles.

It has elements which remind me of a classic chypre, others which remind me of a classic fougere like Azzaro pour Homme, but its main angle is an elegant, complex
and high-quality green scent.

Performance is outstanding. The dry-down is gorgeous, probably my favourite.

This is very masculine in a similar vein to Azzaro PH but it's more refined, less rugged. It's masculinity comes from the fresh green notes, herbs, berries and woods, rather than musky animalic notes, so you can actually wear a fair amount of it and take advantage of its 'powerhouse' nature without feeling that you're cloying the air around you with crotch notes or schmooze vapour.

The green notes - mostly pines and oakmoss - give way to subtle florals, tarragon, berries. Wonderful. I will be wearing this a lot.

talkaboutscents

Just got a tester spray and man, this could be sooooo good if it wasn't for the rose...

Rose, I try to ignore it, but I couldn't. This scent is so perfect, but the rose note brings it all down. It's like a butterfly on a horse's d*ck, sh*t on the fresh snow, you name it. It is very irrelevant. Why would you put rose into the mixture, for what is something very close to perfection ?

Subtract the rose, and this takes you to depths of a pine forest, where the soil is a bit moisty and everything is green. The weather is cold and the high oxygen/cold combination makes your nose burn.

I didn't get most of the notes above, but I definetely get pine, levander, cedar, fir, rose and vetiver. For others maybe my nose is not trained.

It lasts for a good 4 hours for only 2 sprays on my skin. I did not wear it for a full day yet.

Overall, it's very good but the rose makes it a no-buy for me.

Jewelpaq

This is a mans fragrance that is pure bliss. It stands the test of time and will be around forever. This fragrance has a hard cult following. It is very versatile and is hard to clone as it has many, many ingredients that are all blended to perfection. For the first couple of hours is gives great projection and then gets closer to the skin and stays for another 3 hours. Great for any occasion at any season of the year. Very versatile. I do wish that it lasted a bit longer, but I do not mind re applying as it is just brilliant. You will get compliments galore with this one.

I hate Polo. I hate many of the notes listed for this. I flipping love this juice. I have been putting off buying Encre Noir when the weather got cold. I will have this instead. It invigorates me. I feel great when this is on my skin!

EDIT-- Reformulation is CRAP!!!!

boozer

This one you need to take your time with at first sniff i thought to myself oh no!!! a Pine Sol floor cleaner clone and eventually it becomes a very manly and great scent.

Beautiful and mainly fragrance. Long lasting and projects good too. Thank´s Loewe for this classic one!

Absolutely my preferred fragrance! The smell it's like nothing else: pine forest, mountain, rain, field of flowers, all together! After an hour smells like you are in heaven! It's got an 8+ hours longevity and a very good projection and sillage! But not everyone it's gonna like it, certainly, not my wife...

carlosalbertoandradecruz

Very masculine and sexy.
It's the scent my wife prefers on me, together with BOSS Number ONE and YSL Nuit Homme Perfume...
The notes and complexity is tottaly diferent but this frag remembers me Narciso Rodrigues for Him, although both are Aromatic Fougéres.
Pure class. A complex perfume with all notes and stages very well mastered.
One of my all time favorites all over the year / day and night fragrance. Well... not really for the Summer.

Two words - PINE SOL

cvaile

I got a test vial of this, applied liberally to one wrist and I was prepared to chalk it up as a "no" based on the tar-smoke-green opening which I didn't like too much, there was a bitterness and acidity that I don't experience in other scents that use the sweeter side of smoky aroma (as with those that invoke incense).

But as it started to dry down I was amazed at what I was experiencing - it went from "meh" to "WOW" within ten minutes. The herbal weight of the middle notes really started to register just as some of the sweeter notes begin to negate the opening acidity. by the time it fully dries down it becomes a rich, patchouli-heavy resinous evergreen slab of deep green delights.

There are a lot of pine scents - this just isn't one of them. It does have some fresh pine resin in there, but it's just a supporting actor in this case. There is a deep earthy richness to and enough floral sweetness to keep it from just being "Encre-Noir-Pine". This one is captivating and ever-evolving on the skin (at least it works that way on me).

richmilton

Very masculine fragrance for a man. Wouldn't want my wife smelling like this (too manly) and she would never wear it anyway... too feminine and she prefers her more lady-like scents. Gentlemen, check out this juice... perfect for a cold Winter or a rainy day in the early spring. Very green, pine, and sort of old school. Kind of reminds me of Polo Green without the tar note. It's also long lasting with excellent sillage and projection. Every time I wear I get compliments from both men and women. The men want to buy it for themselves, and the ladies want it for their husband, Pure class. One of my all time favorite winter fragrances. 9/10

Néffér

I am actually wearing it and I don't care if it's 'Pour Homme' I love it.. Super sexy ❤️

Martinello

I don't have a signature fragrance but I've put this as my signature because it's my favorite over everything I have experienced till now.
It has it all for me. Longevity, sillage, and for me the perfect smell. I'm a nature loving person and this gives you the feeling of walking in a pine forest after some rain with your leather jacket on whilst you're eating some berries after you've taken a shower with a nice soap. I also believe it can be worn any time of the year because it is fresh too.
This is 10/10 for me.

mirul

I cant stand this fragrance. Very green, balmy, talcumy and fougere. I imagine this smell like in the deep forest. Last forever on my skin. Very 'niche' fragrance. The packaging and bottle really portray the juice inside. Very deep emerald green. Worth to try it

sniffmaster

Absolute class! Very long lasting and great spillage.
Tremendous fresh and spicy.
I know it's not new, but I've just discovered it!

fabio.bernieri

Fragranza molto maschile, cupa ma fresca, dominata da aromi intensi e franchi di pino e resina di conifere. Quasi una sorta di versione più fine (nel senso di maggior qualità) del Pino Silvestre.

Molto particolare. Consiglio di provarla prima di acquistarla.

Voto personale: 7.5/10

VibeOil

Deep green pine and cedar. Hot desert pines, not cool mountain trees. Dusty hot air and spices. Sage, leather and herbal church incense on abed of mosses and dry vetiver. Complex and classic. In fact, my favorite "classic" scent. Sort of a cousin of the much cooler feeling Polo Green, or even a green desert forest cousin to the more austere Terre d' Hermes, if you use some imagination. Also connected via herbal pine notes to Drakkar, Varvatos Vintage and Horizon. To me, this is king of that class of scents.

WildDove

A breeze of dark green. Reminds me of Z14 or Italian Cypress but in a very light and airy form. Perfect for just a suggestion of fragrance. Very fresh, outdoorsy, and actually quite medicinal due to the evergreens.

majedjr58

That is right, I also agree that its the best green fragrance in the market..

Kdu

The best green fragrance I've ever felt to this day ... want to be back as soon as possible !

Englishman

My bottle of Esencia Loewe is nearly full simply because it's not my vibe. This is no comment on the quality of the fragrance; it's an interesting scent which evolves in an equally interesting manner.

Esencia Loewe is marketed as having 200 notes! When I originally got it I was expecting a right dog's dinner of an in-your-face, 80s, retro scent. Something like Drakkar Noir on crack. Turns out it's not like that at all. It is very 1980s but in a much more polite and reserved manner.

The opening has a touch of the loo cleaner/air freshener combo about it. But after a couple of minutes it settles down and the pine and fir notes become history.

The next phase is lively with many different notes rising and falling. But, for me, the main players are bergamot, petitgrain, neroli and jasmine underpinned by iris and rose.

The final phase keeps the citrus and white flower top notes but switches out the iris and rose for the more resinous notes: amber, styrax, galbanaum and a touch of musk and vetiver.

This fragrance does not strike me as being as fresh and green as other reviewers seem to find it. I get more of an orange, peachy, pink colour from it.

I think it would suit a small man who wants to give the impression of being amiable, friendly and non-threatening.

The smell is exactly like what the bottle represents a green green green smell of pine with little bit hint of leather equals a classic muscular smell. It is fantastic smell.

Na0

Unavailable in my country, I asked to a friend to buy me one when she went to Spain... I blind-bought it just by the notes.

It was certainly not a mistake. What a great marvel O_O.... So awesome, so classy, sweet and deep, versatile and shafting.

At first, it's very sweet, like a super special soap (like Image by Cerruti) and then, a deep obscure woody scent comes. And here's the true gem. Like Encre Noire, but not as dark and powerful (and as i'm a Encre Noire lover...) . Very gentle, classy, deep, woody but so sweet. If you search a woody thing without all that classical sharpness which belongs to this type of perfumes, go for it. They managed to success to create a very fresh woody, almost aromatic, and just for it, this is a marvelous perfume.

My new favorite one, Viva España !

This is a very classy and elegant scent. Just bought a bottle blind, and the scent isn't as strong that I though it would be. I will not concider it as a "powerhouse" like many do. It's more fresh and aromatic in a very classy way in my opinion. Starts quite strong and seems unbalanced, but the magic comes very soon. After 10-15 minutes the scent smells very elegant, and lovely of fresh vetiver, dry pine and oak moss. Can be used for all seasons. Perfect for fuzzy gentlemen. Longevity is very good, and sillage is above average. If you are fan of classic colognes like Guerlain Vetiver, Paco Rabanne pour homme, Tsar, Jazz and Pasha I will highly recommend this elegant scent. The bottle is also a sight for sore eyes ;)

Casavulva

Loewe have for a long time impressed me with solid quality and reasonable prices. They are really good on aromatic flavors, and this is their best.

Technically Esencia is a chypre. Of chypres you have leathery (Polo), woody (Yatagan), fruity (Mitsouko), fresh (Pour Monsiur), citrus (Eau Sauvage) and so on. Then there is the fougeres, and there you have amongst others the aromatic genre (Loewe pour homme). The spicy ones are usually orientals (with bases of vanilla, amber, incense...).

But Esencia is neither of those. It is an aromatic chypre! To me it has almost nothing in common with Polo or Yatagan, but much more with aromatics.

What Loewe did here was to take the concept of Loewe pour homme, strengthen and improve the aromatics and change the base to more chypre (oakmoss and tremoss) and less fougere.

The result is Loewe-style spanish aromas (wide, juicy, medium strong but lots of flavors), with a refreshening top and a GREAT drydown.

Really good, one of the best from that era, and still highly wearable.

Gwizz

Well, I have to say I'm slightly staggered. I got a super cheap sample of this on sale & wasn't too sure about it at first wear. It starts off powerful & green with some petitgrain, citrus, juniper and lavender. It then rolls out a beautiful artemisia, which I really love, along with a big dose of pine and fir as well as some floral notes. On dry down there's a leather to be reckoned with along with hints of musk, moss and sandalwood. It projects like crazy & leaves a nice, polite trail. It also lasts right through to the next day!

What's not to like then really? I guess I was just a tad uncertain as it is pretty old school, but that's not such a bad thing in this case, as it's still unlike anything else I've come across before really. I'm also not usually into anything quite this fresh either, but on my second wear I was sold. It really seems to sit nicely with me and is eminently versatile too. The clincher for me came the third time I wore it. My partner virtually never comments on my fragrances, other than to tell me I'm obsessed, but when I walked past her with this on, I heard her say to her sister, "I REALLY love boys when they smell like that!". She then proceeded to surprise me with a full bottle, something she's never done. I think it's fair to say that that's a definite big two thumbs up from both of us for Loewe Esencia!

shahab.zaidi

This is really the winner.
Deep and Dark scent with the haunted and mysterious traces . Masculine and powerful. This is for a man who is strong and unique. Really far away from today's identical citrus aquatic colognes.
Dry down is really mesmarising and soapy green. Love it.

Chicago Tony T

This is a Slumberhouse type of scent. Deep, dark and mysterious. I still can't get over it having 30 notes!
It starts off very spicy and piney. Too many notes to mention but it's definite timeless fragrance. Much deeper than Polo and gentlemen like. A perfect scent for Antonio Banderas in the movie Desperado. It's ment to be worn on special occasions and probably for guys 40 and up. It's mature and I don't think it will appeal to the younger crowd. A little goes a looong way.

Mancorp

After a full wearing, this turns out to be a vetiver scent trimmed with lemon and pine. Very refined, very reminiscent of Givenchy Vetyver. I get no leather and no soap. Which is a good thing. Longevity is on the short side of 6 hours

miritini

A master class in fougeres, one of which if I see I'm down to half a bottle I panic. Elegant and refined like many Spanish fragrances, on me it has great longevity and sillage. As another review says, a touch of everything, but beautifully put together, the oak moss at the very end is an absolute clincher for me.

Aleccsei

It's like walking with a time machine into the past. It's that awful smell that studies used to have, back in the days when people still smoked indoors and rarely opened the windows.

I can imagine that a few people like this kind of a fragrance, but it's definitely not mine.

saurabhjodhani

Smell of cold wintery wet forest. I simply adore this fragrance. A must have for winters in my wardrobe. This fragrance is heavily loaded with oak moss. Other notes I can smell in this fragrance abundantly are leather, lemon, and lavender. This fragrance is a beautiful composition. Although it was introduced in 1988, but still very modern and can easily be pulled off by younger generation. I would definitely consider this as a powerhouse fragrance with good sillage and longevity.

TemptingFate

This is my absolute favorite fragrance for men. There is just something about it...it's crisp and yet very alluring, not heavy like Drakkar Noir. I find it has a seductive and charismatic quality that is hard to find in men's fragrances nowadays. Most of them are either too heavy, too sweet or just smell like a cheap aftershave.

hgonzalez

The opening it's not very good, but after that, with the drydown, get better, a lot better.

It's a old school smell but i think that is acceptable.

PROS:
- Last a lot and projects well
- Not popular
- A old school with nice drydown.
- Quality fragrance
- Elegant

CONS:
- Someone can think that is grandpa smell
- Can be offensive if over apply

It's a nice acquisition for a collector or for someone what looking for a good alternative to the formal - old school scents out there.

If it's your case, try it.

Regards.

Sonnyy

My wife bought this one for me I don't know why?
Not something I would have considered however its not bad reminds me of Tsar by Van Cleff.
Personally I would have been quite content with another bottle of Acqua di Parma!

Hélio Sérgio Rocha

Aggressive and synthetic mossy opening of green accords... Like deodorant...

But then, the vetiver and leather comes up doing a well blended aura making things better,

But i did not like.

Some kinda "oldschool" and offensive to my nose

:D

The higher the unattainable perfection.
A perfume quite complex, but it is readily apparent.
I am delighted with this aroma. I have one.
Can be a perfume simple and complex at the same time, fresh and vibrant at the same time; confidant or expansive at the same time.
With this quality I would not say that this perfume seems to be in the past (1988), but in the future (2088).
Technically is executed in a perfect way.
The Loewe definitely won me and I can say without the slightest doubt that is one of the best perfume brands in the world.
Love Loewe.

RUDOLFO512

This fragrance is absolutely stunning. I love the smell of fresh pine and fir. It is elegant and can be worn for both day and evening. The drydown is the true masterpiece of this fragrance. I love it and I am glad I bought it.

bp

When the complexity of olfactory notes is combined with simplicity of perfection, the end product can be something as excellent as this Esencia Loewe.
This scent is quite elaborate, representing perfectly all the bravery, personality and charisma of a true Latin man.
In my view, this perfume is great for all men of strong character, regardless of their age.
Some features make this perfume substitute to Loewe 7. Both of which are excellent, memorable, timeless, remarkable and seductive.
Longevity and projection are surreal.
Of all the perfumes perfect, some are more than others and this is certainly one of the most excellent perfume I've ever felt.
By having everything to do with my personality and my way of being and living, for sure I'll get a Esencia Loewe briefly.
I love all products from Loewe. It is the fashion brand that I'm most proud of being born in the Iberian Peninsula.
Congratulations Loewe. Keep up the excellent work.

Classic Fougere, done so well! glad i could find a bottle online, shipped to me at reasonable price! Green, just a tad musty to keep it masculine - just too good to be true! 8/10.

Loewe Esencia is what the heaven could smell like . So green , so fresh and inspiring . Strong once u spray it , needs twenty minutes to show its best notes . Projection is good , longevity is fine , smell is so classy and unique . U might consider applying this on a paper and come back to it after 24 hours , u will smell the best of it .

It's a mature scent, very very strong. For those that want to be noticed. The dark green color of the bottle is very appropriate, it has a deep green smell with something more substantial, maybe the leather smell. Unfortunatelly my wife doesn't like this fragrance: it has the best longevity on my skin compared with many other famous fragrances.

This smells like furniture polish to me. I was utterly disappointed and couldn't wait to scrub this off mu wrist.

jaajaa

first i don't like it at all.
but after 1 hour it's become a good one.

siririschmoos

Class in a glass...........bottle. Sorta smooth like suede, upper tier not because of hype but because of its rich opening, drydown and really good life span.

Not exactly for casual events.

I seem to make out more lemon than what other people have noticed and voted on above.

alfarom

A civilized powerhouse. Sounds like an oxymoron? Try and see. Leather, green and herbaceous notes, pine, artemisia and lavender surrounded by a remarkable soapy vibe and laying on the usual musky/mossy base. An extremely elegant chypre. Sort of Yatagan after an haircut.

Great projection, reasonable lasting power.

its masterpiece now and for future

6opar

ok, let's face it, i don't think all this stuff You've noted as fragrance content is really there.
Because if your notes are correct, then Esencia should be the biggest male scent. As it is done in a delicious harmony and finesse.

I get lemon, lavender and spicy greens. Lemon note is quite strong (as it is in Loewe Homme) and somewhere along the way the chypre feel becomes dominant.

Later on sweetness is evoked. And dry-down is all about mossy woods.

Masculine and a bit 80's, but still very fashionable as the designer's clothes themselves.
