Explore the three walled enclosures of this 1,000-year-old fortress, one of the largest citadels built by the Arabs in Spain.

Journey back to ancient Almeria with a visit to the Alcazaba, a 10th-century hilltop citadel where Arab rulers governed for hundreds of years up until the end of the 15th century. In more recent times it has been an impressive presence in numerous films such as Conan the Barbarian as well as the global TV hit Game of Thrones.

The Alcazaba is divided into three walled compounds that extend up the slope of the hill. Enter through the Puerta de la Justicia (Justice Gate) and start your visit in the lowest of the three sections which used to be the Alcazaba's barracks. Today it is laid out like a garden containing flower-filled terraces and ponds.

Venture into the second compound where there are remains of a mosque that was converted into a chapel by the Catholic monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand I of Aragon. Another noteworthy feature of this enclosure are the remains of old Arab baths. Separating the first two compounds is the Muro de la Campana de la Vela, an ancient wall with a bell tower that used to sound the alarm when pirates were approaching.

In the third enclosure see several towers including the Tower of Homage and the Gunpowder Tower. Then cast your gaze over the city below from the top of the castle walls. From this magnificent vantage point enjoy spectacular views of Almeria's cave quarter, the Barrio de la Chanca and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Alcazaba sits on top of a hill and can be seen from most parts of the city. Come by bus or park your car for a fee in the spaces in the streets below the castle or in the port. Then walk up the narrow streets to reach the historical attraction. It is open daily except for Mondays. Although the fortress is steep in places there is partial access for disabled people and others with reduced mobility.
