The abertzale left warned on Friday that this "historic decission" of definitively ceasing violence stated by ETA on Thursday "does not mean the end of the political conflict". Thus, it advocated starting dialogue to reach a "democratic agreement" on "the recognition of the Basque nation and its right to decide".
Leaders of the abertzale left Rufi Etxeberria and Maribi Ugarteburu presented, in Basque and Spanish, respectively, a statement describing ETA’s "definitive giving up" of armed activity as a "historic decission" that "will be a milestone" in Basque politics.
Both abertzale spokespeople appeared at a press conference in Donostia-San Sebastián with other historical members of the abertzale left, such as Tasio Erkizia, Joseba Permach, Juan José Petrikorena, Eugenio Etxebeste "Antxon", Iñaki Olalde and Jone Goirizelaia.
