Plenus verbigenae Paulus decertat amore Dum vere Fidei pandit sacra dogmata legis. Cui Nero Romanus caput a ceruice reuelli Jusserat atque Idola coli pro numine vero. (Gravure originale du XVIIe siècle)

S.n., s.l. [Hollande] (Circa 1600), 32,5x27,5cm (cuvette: 28,5x21cm), une feuille.

Original etching done by Hendrik Goltzius chisel, probably after a painting of the sixteenth century by Maarten de Vos (or Martin). Race on watermarked laid paper, working from the early seventeenth century. This is an illustration of the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul, who would be beheaded in Rome, probably during the reign of Nero. Latin legend at the bottom of the engraving. Artist's signature in the plate. Mention numbered "13" in the portion reserved for the caption at the bottom of the engraving. Handwritten mention "181" on the sidelines in the upper right corner of the board. Visible watermark with transparency. Some foxing mainly marginal, small and marginal stains without damage to etching a wrinkle paper, a trace of angular creases, otherwise nice condition for this extremely rare engraving and freshness. Maarten de Vos (or Martin), Antwerp from 1532 to 1603, was a Flemish painter. He was a pupil of Frans Floris, and then completed his training with Tintoretto. He was responsible for historical paintings in the Mannerist style, including a Holy Paul bitten by a snake on the island of Malta '(1568) which is in the Louvre in Paris. Hendrik Goltzius (Mühlbracht 1558 - 1617 Haarlem) is a cartoonist, painter and engraver Dutch. His prints, very popular, from his own designs or implementing the works of his contemporaries, contributed effectively to the spread of Mannerism in Europe. With his grandfather, his father and brother, he belongs to a dynasty of Flemish artists.
