Telemundo journalist and host Maria Celeste Arrarás has replied to Abraham Quintanilla’s critical Facebook post about the new Telemundo series El Secreto de Selena through her Al Rojo Vivo show.
“It is very difficult to have to respond to Mr. Abraham Quintanilla’s statements about me because, although so many years have passed, I know that the pain of a daughter’s death is something that a father never overcomes,” says Arrarás in the 4-minute video. “My intention has never been to offend Mr. Quintanilla or his family. Since I began investigating Selena’s murder 24 years ago, as part of a special assignment, I have always tried to do so in a serious manner and with respect.”

Arrarás’ video and a Facebook post came a day after Quintanilla posted an emotional statement on the Quintanilla Productions Facebook page after Telemundo launched the series El Secreto de Selena (Selena’s Secret), which is an adaptation of the book of the same name written by Arrarás and published in 1997.
The series, which premiered on Aug. 25, is based on Selena’s murder trial and reveals details of Arrarás’ investigation of the case as well as her interview with the killer, Yolanda Saldivar.
“I am neither the first nor the last journalist to write a book about a famous person who died tragically, based on factual evidence and testimonies,” says Arrarás.
According to Quintanilla’s Facebook post, the series has false details, including evidence and a romance that didn’t exist. He also emphasizes that the series reopens wounds of the past. “The true story is that since the death of my beloved daughter Selena, my family and I have dedicated every second to protecting, elevating and honoring her short life.”
However, in her video, Arrarás clarifying point by point Quintanilla’s accusations and says the book is based on evidence, manuscripts of the court and real testimonies. Furthermore, she adds, “the series does not favor in any way the version of the convicted murderer.” Arrarás also shows evidence of an exclusive interview Quintanilla gave her during the investigation. She also stated that all proceeds from the book have been donated to funding scholarships in Selena’s name.
