Product Description
Features a Prolific PL-2303HX Rev D chipset for the best combination of performance and wide driver support. Drivers available for Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8. 7, Vista, XP, macOS/Mac OS X 10.6 and later; open source drivers included in Linux kernel 2.4.31 and later. Windows 7 - 11 automatically detects and guides driver install without disk. Not compatible with ARM-based Windows (MS Surface). Compatibility Works with devices with RS-232 serial ports like: other PCs with RS-232 ports, Bluetooth serial adapters, PDAs, GPS receivers, routers, firewalls, modems, printers, embedded character displays, scan tools, sonar units, embedded boards, etc. Works with software like: HyperTerminal, TeraTerm, WinDBG, all open source serial software on Linux, etc. Connector compatibility note The DB9 connector has fixed female side screw in connections. For connecting to a device that also has fixed female side connectors an inexpensive DB9 Female/Female Mini Gender Changer (Coupler) will be needed. Genuine We use only genuine Prolific chips. There has been a problem with some USB serial adapters using clone chips not actually from Prolific. These adapters will not work with Prolific's latest drivers, thus won't have support on recent operating systems like Windows 7 - 11. Because we only use genuine Prolific chips, our adapter is always compatible with the latest drivers from Prolific.

One observation. The unit comes with a driver CD and instructions to install the drivers before connecting the adapter to the computer. That might be true with XP or Vista, but Windows 7 will download a WHCL driver automatically as long as you have an Internet connection when you first plug it in.
I have not had any compatibility issues at all. I have used it to connect to several different external modems and numerous Cisco routers, switches, and access points and it just works.
UPDATE: I plugged it into my Vista Pro desktop and the drivers installed automatically. Works perfectly there as well. Will test on a Sony Flip Win8 on Christmas and report findings on that as well.
UPDATE, Part Deux: Works fine on Win 8.1 and Win10. On my wife's Win8.1 Sony it took a couple of minutes to load the driver. On my upgraded Win10 Dell 4600 workstation it only took a few seconds to load the drivers.
#1) The Amazon page says it's a female DB9, and it isn't. It matches the male connector found on Windows boxes. It was OK, though. I thought I needed a female, so I got what I really needed.
#2) I'm working with 2 computers, a Dell 5414 laptop (Debian Buster) and a Raspberry Pi 3+ (Raspian Stretch). I'm trying to put the Pi on the Internet as a server. That's why I needed this adapter -- I need to talk to Juniper and Cisco routers and stuff, and the Pi has no (easily accessible) 232 port.
Plogable's Linux dox say, essentially, "Plug it in." That works on the Pi which creates just /dev/ttyUSB0, but not on the laptop which creates ttyUSB0 through 3. And it makes ttyUSB3 the active connection.
The way to deal with this, I found after several hours futzing with USB0 and talking with Plugable support, is to plug it into an already booted computer, type 'sudo dmesg' on a terminal, and read the last line. Linux notices the newly plugged in USB device and deals with it. But Plugable doesn't say anything about the possibility of more than one ttyUSB entry in /dev anywhere, and your machine might do something unexpected, like mine did.
Plugable support, BTW, is a delight. Very competent, responsive, and helpful.
The Drivers provided by Plugable are also great. Drivers are available for Windows XP x32, Windows 7 x32, and Windows 7 x64, as well as MAC OSX. I did not have a Mac available for testing, but the drivers and adapter worked perfectly under the 3 windows environments tested. You will most likely need to change your COM Port assignment each time you reboot Windows or change to a different USB port, as windows will Dynamically assign a COM Port on a first-available basis. However, I have noticed that once I disabled the non-existent serial port in the BIOS of my machine, my COM assignment stayed the same as long as I used the same USB port. If all of this is a bit too technical for you, the provided PDF user manual offers step by step instructions with accurate screen shots for Windows Vista/7 and 2000/XP. Mac instructions are also included, but I have not verified them.
As for its function, it works great and it does take the Prolific driver, which is most important to me. My disappointment is really superficial, because this cable will do the job, but how hard is it to update your produce picture? There is absolutely no resemblance between the two cables.
