13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
La Giraldilla, Havana Cuba

I am enrolled in a Master’s Program at Antioch University New England and last spring signed up for Food Systems of Cuba which involved a ten-day trip to visit Cuba’s urban agricultural cooperatives. While in Havana, I took this photo of La Giraldilla, which is said to represent the only woman Governor of Cuba who watch for the return of her husband every day. To me the statue represents the graceful determination of the Cuban people as they forge ahead with ideas on how to make tourism sustainable. I think Educational Travel represents the best in sustainable travel. It is more of a cultural exchange than just regular consumer tourism.
