Abolengo refers to an illustrious ancestry or lineage. It is also a napkin brand in Chile produced by CMPC, owned by a family considered of pedigree in the settler Chilean society. The company’s extractive activity has damaged Mapuche lands for 40 years and continues to do so. The show consists of an installation of three paper boat sculptures representing the caravels in which Christopher Columbus arrived in the “New World” in 1492. Three videos show two TV commercials for Abolengo napkins and another made by the artist for the exhibit. Kütral’s exhibit connects colonization, consumption, and Native territorial autonomy, redefining the word “abolengo.”
