If you’re looking for a convenient way to explore the area and all of its attractions, then having your own car will make things much easier.
You won’t have to worry about finding public transportation or waiting for taxis to arrive. Plus, with a car, you can easily drive out of the city to explore nearby attractions like Mayan ruins and cenotes.
Cancun itself has a well-developed public transportation system that includes buses and taxis, which can be used to get around the city and to nearby attractions.
Additionally, there are many shuttle service options to and from the airport and within the hotel zone.
If you plan on staying in the hotel zone and not venturing far outside of it, a car will not be necessary.
However, if you plan on exploring the surrounding areas, a car may be more convenient. It’s also worth considering that parking in Cancun’s hotel zone can be difficult and expensive.
In case you do rent a car, keep these tips in mind:
✅ Drive on the right side of the road and obey traffic laws and signs.
✅ Be prepared for heavy traffic and slow-moving vehicles, especially during rush hour and in tourist areas.
✅ Be aware of potential hazards such as pedestrians, bicycles, and moto-taxis (motorcycles used as taxis).
✅ Be cautious of topes (speed bumps) that are common on local roads.
✅ Be aware that many roads in Cancun are not well-lit at night, so use extra caution when driving at night.
✅ Keep your car windows closed and doors locked at all times to avoid car theft.
✅ Remember that many locals drive aggressively and may not obey traffic laws, so be prepared for unexpected maneuvers.

Driving licenses from most countries, like the UK, US, Canada, EU, etc. will work. However, if your license is not in English, you’ll need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) beforehand.

In Acapulco
Renting a car in Acapulco can be a very different experience from Cancun. While at first, it might be tempting to rent a car here because of limited public transportation options, I’d generally advise against it for the following reasons:
✔ Acapulco’s streets can be congested and chaotic, with heavy traffic and poor road conditions in some areas. Not the best conditions for driving a car, especially for someone who’s new to the country.
✔ Mexico also has different traffic laws and road conditions than other countries. Combine that with the previous point, and you’ll get a very different driving experience.
✔ Parking can be quite difficult in Acapulco, and, even when you find it, you’ll often have to pay for parking.
There are more reasons, but safety alone is big enough that you shouldn’t rent a car in the city.
Taxis are readily available in Acapulco, and they are a good option for getting around the city.
Taxi drivers are used to the local road conditions and are generally aware of which roads to use in order to avoid traffic congestion and whatnot.
If sightseeing is your main concern, then there are lots of tours that’ll show you around the city and include pickup and drop off at your hotel. Given all of these factors, there’s really no need to rent a car in Acapulco.

However, as with any vacation destination, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to ensure your safety.

✅ Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash, as this can make you a target for theft.
✅ Avoid carrying valuable items, like passports and credit cards, in easily accessible places, like back pockets or purses.
✅ Do not leave personal belongings, like bags or cell phones, unattended in public places.
✅ Keep a copy of your passport and other important documents in a safe place, like a hotel safe.
✅ Use official taxis, which can be identified by their yellow color, and avoid using unlicensed taxis or public transportation.
