Gov. DeSantis doles out $1K bonuses to first responders

Ron_DeSantis_(51460337106)
The checks will be sent out in the next two weeks, DeSantis said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis personally put the $1,000 bonuses for first responders into recipients’ hands at an event in Jacksonville on Monday, the first checks to be distributed.

The money, which will go to nearly 100,000 first responders and police officers across the state, comes from the federal government as part of the COVID-19 stimulus funds, which DeSantis has railed against as the main source of inflation.

Anyone employed in law enforcement, fire rescue and as an emergency medical technician as of May 1 is eligible.

DeSantis pushed for the bonuses last year because of the work police and first responders did responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. He decided to ask lawmakers again this year to approve the bonuses.

“It’s a tough job, but since COVID, needing to flex and put themselves out there — we thought last year this was something that was appropriate to do to show support,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis said the checks, included in the budget passed by lawmakers in May for the fiscal year that began July 1, will be issued in the next two weeks. The actual checks will be more than $1,000 to ensure the recipients get $1,000 after taxes, he added.

“(The federal government is) unleashing 87,000 IRS agents on the public very soon so we don’t want you to get caught up,” DeSantis said, referring to the new federal law beefing up Internal Revenue Service ranks to increase tax code enforcement.

DeSantis also mentioned the announcement comes one day after the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93. He lauded the bravery of first responders that day and noted Florida is the top spot for retirees from the New York City police and first responder agencies.

“If you look at the folks who were in 9/11 or in the various agencies in NYC, the people that have left the tri-state area on retirement overwhelmingly choose to come to Florida. I mean it’s not even close,” DeSantis said. “That’s something that strengthens our communities.”

The GOP will whine that canceling student debt is vote buying, while cheering for this, which is exactly the same thing.

I doubt the average voter will be be disgruntled that money sent to a state under the pretext of a national crisis was used to give first responders—groups who perform a necessary public duty—a bonus of up to $1,000. However, they may have a problem with having to reimburse Harvard law grads who promised to repay their student loans, by a tune of up to $20,000.

I mean, one made taxpayers directly gender studies majors on loans they promised to pay back by up to $20,000. The other was federal funding given to a state that’s being used to give first responders a bonus of up to $1,000.

He forgot to mention that that money was from Bidens bill. A bill that desantis voted against then took credit for it. You peope are so gullible. You have no idea what is going on. After calling President Biden and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan “Washington at its worst,” Ron DeSantis attempted to take credit for the funding it provided for law enforcement in Florida.

Yet again Detention deputies are the MOST overlooked of the profession, and THEY ARE FIRST RESPONDERS!! How dare you spit on them buy leaving them out of the FIRST RESPONDER stimulus. If it wasn’t for all of THOSE first responders, who would be watching your criminal element!!! This made me sick to my stomach how yet again some of the best deputies are overlooked for doing a job NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO DO and you treat them like red headed step children!¡ Shame on you Mr. DeSantis!!!!

I’m sure Florida’s first responders will endorse DeSantis’s post election policy of “open carry” without a permit.

After all, police would just love to have more guns on the street.

I bet most police forces support a Republican. Why would they support a political party that supports the defund movement, cashless bail, and left wing extremist DA’s?

Impeach, did you know that in his last year as President, Trump approved a bill that reduced
funding (defunding) for public safety employees and law enforcement.

I imagine the advocates of ‘Defund the Police’—many of whom evidently changed their tune when it was no longer politically convenient—had something bigger and more localized in mind than some random budget cuts for federal grants (that were already funded at historic levels during the Trump administration) proposed in the middle of a pandemic and in consideration of what could pass a Democratic Congress.

What is wrong with cashless bail? Bail isn’t a punishment, it’s designed to ensure that the accused appears in court. Cashless bail, with the judge being allowed to deny bail if a person is a danger to the community or if they are unsatisfied that they will appear in court, is a much better system, in my opinion.

The first responders should be thanking the Biden Administration for the bonus. This money is coming from the American Rescue Plan which DeSantis vigorously opposed.

Desantis is trying to distract from his plans to demand further abortion bans, but: “It is plainly obvious that the conservative movement and a substantial portion of the American population have been grossly misled by anti-abortion messaging.

The median position on abortion, roughly speaking, is that it’s not exactly good, but that it should be widely available early in the pregnancy, and universally available in cases of rape or incest, or if the health of the mother is threatened, or if the fetus is medically nonviable. In practical terms, this covers virtually all abortions—a fact that has been buried by decades of hysterical anti-abortion propaganda.” prospect.org

Ron is hysterical and out-of-touch with American values.

Tom, no one is saying that Pronoun Prince actually said those exact words. Look at what he has said and done and you will see his plans. One example: Desantis vetoed twice contraceptives for poor women—because his Catholic Church told him contraceptives cause abortion of a fertilized egg!!! Desantis complied and vetoed!!! What are you thinking–that he won’t allow egg abortions but will allow embryo and fetus abortions!?! There’s more, but that should be enough. It also explains his silence!

If FactCheck wants the facts they should go directly to the 2018 debates where Desantis pledged to sign a “fetal heartbeat” ban which refers to a six week ban like Texas had. AND that was BEFORE Dobbs!! “Pro-life websites agree!

Corrections Officers and Detention Deputies are not receiving the second 1K bonus Governor Ron DeSantis promised for law enforcement and First Responders?!?!? That doesn’t sound right! Corrections officers are neither LEOs or First Responders? No Way, that cannot be right!!! Love the guy but this cannot be right. With corrections officers protecting Florida from pure evil at the jails and prisons around the state let us all pray that the Governor takes this opportunity to make this right!
