La Giraldilla

La Giraldilla is a historic symbol of Havana.

This bronze statue was created in 1634 and placed on top of the western watchtower of El Castillo de La Fuerza Real, the Royal Castle.

The artist, Gerónimo Martín Pinzón, based the sculpture on the legendary figure of the famous Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain.

The sculpture is actually a weathervane that has let ships know the direction of the wind as they approach the port of La Havana for centuries.

A Love Story

It is believed that La Giraldilla honors Isabel de Bobadilla, Havana’s first and only female governor.

Isabel’s husband, Hernando de Soto, would one day set sail to search for the fountain of youth and explore a vast land to the north that today we call the USA. La Giraldilla is said to represent Isabel looking out over the ocean each night waiting for Hernando to return.

The key has been a symbol fo Havana since it’s founding in 1519, and the cross represents the chivalric order of Calatrava.

La Giraldilla itself would become the most famous symbol fo Havana. Today it is even featured on the Havana Club rum label.
