In rapid response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of weekly conferences for U.S. Emergency Medicine (EM) residencies, our team launched a new initiative called ALiEM Connect. This FREE, live, educational telecast, however, is not just a one-way webinar of premiere speakers. We also incorporate a monitored and curated backchannel discussion on the Slack platform, where participants can answer each others’ questions and popular questions are addressed by the live speaker.

Watch the full All-EM residency graduation celebration on the YouTube platform to see the videostream as well as the real-time comments from celebrities behind the scenes and those watching the event from home.

> ALiEM Connect 3: Level Up – An All-EM Residency Graduation Celebration (June 15, 2020)

Despite the impact it has had on our EM community, we refuse to let COVID-19 get in the way of celebrating the graduation of our senior EM residents and all the residents leveling-up a year. > Instructions on Joining for Residency Program Leadership

We sympathize with your rushed needs to continue educating residents during this time of crisis. If you wish to use this 2-hour event as part of your residency conference curriculum, we are happy to team up with you. Based on feedback from our first Connect event, we have streamlined the onboarding and attendance tracking process:

  1. If you have a leadership role in a U.S. EM residency program, please complete our brief RSVP form. This will require only your name, email contact information, and residency program name. We will email you with further instructions on preparing for the event.
  2. You will receive a private link for you and your residents to join the ALiEM Connect Slack account. Do not share this link publicly.

If you already participated in our first Connect event, just have your residents return to the same Connect Slack account. The link for the YouTube livestream will be posted at the top of the #announcements channel.

For EM Residents

Before the event:

  1. Download the Slack app to their phone or desktop in anticipation of participating in the backchannel conversation.
  2. Join the ALiEM Connect Slack account using the link provided to you by your residency program leadership.

On the day of the event:

  1. Use either 2 devices or a computer with 2 windows open to allow simultaneous viewing of the telecast and participation on Slack.
  2. Open the ALiEM Connect Slack account and find your program’s channel.
  3. Document your attendance using the method determined by your program (e.g., #prog-hogwarts-univ). It may be as simple as a 👍🏽 emoji when they “check in!”
  4. Navigate to the Slack #announcements channel. The livestream video link is already posted there.

Participants: Rules of Engagement on Slack

The Slack app provides an opportunity for the audience to engage with each other and the speakers. Representatives from the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) will also be on Slack to help allay any concerns and answer your questions regarding ABEM certification during the COVID-19 times.

Because this is done on a virtual, text-based platform where one can’t hear sarcasm or have eye contact, humor and non-constructive statements are discouraged. Here are 5 other rules of engagement:

  1. Professionalism: Be nice and give other members the benefit of the doubt.
  2. Channels: The main conversation will happen in the #event-chat channel. If desired, your program can create new channels for small-group chats.
  3. Threaded conversations: To keep conversations less chaotic on the #event-chat channel, you can respond to comments using the threaded option.
  4. Emojis: We encourage the use of emojis instead of unnecessarily cluttering the channel with “I agree” or “Me too!”. For instance, 👍🏽 emojis could be used to say “I have that same question” under other people’s questions. Popular questions will be posed to the speakers by the moderators.
  5. Privacy and confidentiality: As always, please avoid violating HIPAA privacy rules. Although Slack has upgraded our account to be HIPAA-compliant, you never know if someone is reading over your shoulders.

Will this telecast be recorded for later viewing?

Of course! Check out our ALiEM Interactive Video YouTube account after the event airs. Slack backchannel discussions, however, are only open concurrently with the live broadcast.
