Designing Master Key SystemsKey SystemsCylinders and KeysStep 1Determine the type of locking system• Conventional “open & restricted keyways”- Not contract controlled• Patented locking system- A notice of acceptance will berequired between Corbin Russwinand Owner- Factory-based system- Key blank distribution restrictions arein place• Security (secondary locking mechanisms, example; Pyramid Security)• High security (same as Security plusUL437 – example; Pyramid HighSecurity)• Standalone access control lockingdevices (at door wiring, example;Access 800)- To facilitate multiple users throughcommon doors• Integrated locking systems (hard wiredinto access control systems)Step 2Establish the level of the master keysystem. The higher the level the lesssecure.• Level two – “Simple Master Key system”- Change key, and master key only• Level three – “Grand Master Key system”- Change key, master key, and GrandMaster Key• Level four – “Great Grand Master Keysystem”- Change key, master key, GrandMaster Key, and Great GrandMaster Key• Levels higher than four are notrecommended for security reasons- With more levels, additional masterpins in each chamber of the cylinderwould be required, and with theadditional master pins the possibilityof unauthorized key interchangescould occur*See pages 50-52 on How to Establish KeySystems.*Step 3Establish key hierarchy, key issuingpolicies and procedures, andadministrative disciplines.• Who, if anyone is authorized to carrythe top master key?• Who carries master keys and change keys?- Does every employee receive a key?45078-3/14• What disciplinary action(s) is being putin place for violations?- Fines or Deposits> Lost keys> Keys not returned- Will there be a key receipt required?> Where will that be kept?• Who is the systems administrator?- Authorized to purchase- Responsible for Key ControlAdministration• Who is the Key Control Administrator?- Maintain key control software &all transactionsStep 4System Layout• Helpful Hints- KISS “Keep It Simple System”> Do not use the term sub-master(not unless it’s level 6 and higher)• Lowest level possible• Key to the building security objectivesNOT to the people- Determine if the system is to bedesigned for Security or Convenience• No cross keying, especially with patentedlocking systems and higher• Key alike within master key groups asmuch as possible- Avoid top-heavy systems (example;few change keys used under masters)• Has the right function of lockset beenselected?- Storeroom vs. Classroom vs. Entry- Single cylinder vs. double cylinder> If double cylinder, how is theinside cylinder to be keyed?• Provide adequate quantity of keys- Top Master keys “limit the number ofthese to only a few”- Master keys “also limit the numberthese”- Change keys per key set and/or perkeyed alike sets- Special operating keys> Control keys “limit the numberof these”Separate the internal departmentsinto sectors, example are:• Perimeter- Including all exterior doors, roofsurfaces, gates and fences, andadjacent buildings.• Operations- Sensitive areas crucial to dailyoperations, such as plant engineering, security and mechanical operations.• Management- Areas that are vital for daily businessactivities, primarily human resources, administration, executive offices, IT,sales, and accounting.• Services- Areas that provide employees andvisitors with services, such asrestrooms, medical treatment areas, housekeeping, food service, retail(unless it's a leased outside source).• Unique Applications- Door openings requiring accesscontrol hardware where key overrideis required, or any other specialapplication which would be unique.• Tenants- Any tenants that are not part of thebuilding.Step 5Servicing & Maintenance• In-house or outside locksmith- Ensure proper training- Establish key cutting log- Establish service request procedures• Service equipment- Key kit- Code cutter that complies withsystems depths & spacingspecifications- Locksmithing tools, fixtures &accessories• Establish stock levels & requirements toavoid misuse of multi-section key blanks- Additional cylinders ready foremergencies- Additional key blanks (of all keyways)• Who or where are the key blanks goingto be kept?• Who is authorized to cut keys?- What form of work order will be usedto authorize cutting of keys?- Who will sign the work order?- What records will be kept & where?• What type of reports will be required?- Overdue keys- Miss-cut keys> Who receives the reports?• Once a key has been cut, whatinstructions are given to the recipient?- Key receipt recommended• Ensure that all transactions are recordedby the Key Control Administrator• ENFORCEMENT FROM THE START!SUPPORT AND BACK THOSE WHOARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAININGAND SERVICING THE SYSTEM.Key Systems.3

Cylinder and Key StampingKey SystemsVKC and CKCVisual and Concealed Key ControlWith these options, keys and/or cylindersare stamped with their respective keysetsymbol, so lock mix-ups during installationor key mix-ups afterwards are less likelyto happen – and easier to straighten outif they do. Lost keys are also easier toreplace. The coded information on thecylinder tells you how the cylinder is keyed, thereby eliminating trial and error. For example, the symbol AA1 shown inthe illustration identifies the lock to beoperated by grand master key A, masterkey AA and change key AA1. Uponwritten authorization from the buildingowner to an authorized Corbin RusswinDistributor, a bitting list can be furnishedfor each job to translate the symbols intokey bittings. If a key is lost, it can easily be replaced byreferring to the symbol on the cylinder andthe bitting on the bitting list. VKC is notavailable on Security or Pyramid cylinders.Visual Key Control (VKC)For Greater ConvenienceThe key symbol is stamped on the plugface or other visible portion of the front ofthe cylinder. (VKC is available on all keys, but not available on Security, CK4400Series Lockset or Pyramid cylinders.)AA1Concealed Key Control (CKC)For Greater SecurityFor greater security, specify CKC on thecylinders. The key symbol is stamped ina concealed location, such as the rear ofthe cylinder. It is not visible to the generaloccupants of the building but can beaccessed by authorized personnel uponremoving the cylinder from the lockset. The following codes and definitions have been established for specifying cylinder and key stamping:Quick CodeDefinitionVKC0No keyset, registry number, keyway, nor bitting stamping on any keys. Temporary AccessKey SystemsConstruction KeyingCONSTRUCTIONMASTERConstruction Master KeyingConstruction Master Keying (CMK) is a CorbinRusswin keying option that provides the extrasecurity needed in the transition from constructionof a building or complex to completion. The construction master key operates all CorbinRusswin cylinders while the building is underconstruction. Upon completion of the constructionphase, it can be voided without removing thecylinders from the locks, simply by turning thechange key in each cylinder. Interchangeablecore jobs with construction master keying furtherrequire a construction control key to install andremove cores during the construction phase. The permanent master and change keys for thesystem are always packed and shipped separately, and the order must include the names andaddresses of individuals to whom the construction, permanent master and change keys should besent. This feature is NOT available on Security orPyramid cylinders.SKD CautionUnless otherwise specified, SKD sets will beconstruction master keyed. When constructionmaster keying is established for SKD sets, CorbinRusswin issues a separate SKD CMK key as well asan SKD CMK Control key if required. How to Order CMKTo order locksets and/or cylinders with theconstruction master key feature, the quick codeCMK should be indicated as an option.Temporary Construction CoresLockableA more secure method of construction keyingfor interchangeable core hardware is the use oftemporary construction cores. Corbin Russwinrecommends this method of construction keyingfor IC jobs.Hardware is furnished with construction coresthat are keyed alike to a combination unrelatedto the permanent system’s master key. Whenthe building is turned over to the owner, thepermanent cores are installed and the temporaryconstruction cores can be returned to CorbinRusswin for credit. The IC temporary construction cores are availablein red, blue and green. The color optionsenhance the user's ability to easily control accessto different locations on a construction site, oridentify different locations for specific keyingapplications. How to Order LockableFor 6-pin, use quick code CT6IC 6-pin with Red temporary construction core (Red),CT6RIC 6-pin with temporary construction core (Blue), CT6BIC 6-pin with temporary construction core (Green), CT6GFor 7-pin, use quick code, CT7IC 7-pin with temporary construction core (Red), CT7RIC 7-pin with temporary construction core (Blue), CT7BIC 7-pin with temporary construction core (Green), CT7GFor Pyramid, use quick code CTP.Note: Orders specifying only CT6 or CT7 withoutthe color designation will receive the Red ICtemporary construction core by default.Examples:ML2051 x LSA x 626 x RH x CT61080 x 114 x A01 x 626 x CTPCL3355 x NZD x 626 x CT6B1080-114-A01 x 626 x CT6GPermanent cores must be ordered separately.DisposableCorbin Russwin offers two formats of disposabletemporary cores. KeywaysKeyway TypesKey SystemsMultiplex/Simplex KeywaysMultiplex keyways can be used together toexpand a keying system. A simplex keywayis independent, stands alone and cannotbe tied into any other keyway to expand akeying system.All/Multi-Section/Single Section KeysAll/Multi-section keys can be used on morethan one cylinder with different sections. For example: a key cut on the L41 multisectionkeyblank will pass cylinder in theL1, L2, L3 and L4 keyways. Single sectionkeys can be used with cylinders of thesame section. For example: a key cut onthe L4 single section keyblank will onlypass a cylinder in the L4 keyway.Active KeywaysKeyways which are available for newCorbin Russwin keying systems areconsidered active. In the case of newmaster key systems, the factory reservesthe right to select the keyway from arange of standard keyways, based onusage in a particular geographical area.Inactive KeywaysMany older Corbin Russwin keyways aredesignated inactive. No new systemsshall be established on these keyways. However, they continue to be available tosupport existing keying systems.Restricted KeywaysFor security reasons, these keyway profilesare not shown.Protected KeywaysKey Systems Administration reservesthe final decision as to which protectedkeyway family will be selected. A noticeof acceptance showing the facilitiesname, address and contact information isrequired before orders can be processedFor security reasons, these keyway profilesare not shown.Pyramid KeywaysPyramid keyways are only availablefor Pyramid cylinders and separatespecifications are used from conventionalCorbin Russwin keying systems. Newsystems for Pyramid require a Notice ofAcceptance document to be on file withKey Systems Administration. All ordersfor Pyramid must have a system specificRegistration Certificate attached and allproducts must ship directly to the enduser unless a quantity - specific Letter ofAuthorization accompanies the purchaseorder. For security reasons, these keywayprofiles are not shown.Bitting ClassesCorbin Russwin has several sets ofdimensional standards for bitting (cutting)keys. If the wrong specifications are usedwhen making keys on code machinesin the field, they will not operate inconjunction with factory supplied cylindersand keys. The bitting class is given for eachgroup of keyways. How to Establish Key SystemsKey Systems2- and 3-Level SystemsTo Specify a Simple Master Key System(2 Levels of Keying)The master key symbol consists of TWOletters, such as AA. The change keynumbers are added to the master keyletters. The numbers come FIRST: 1AA,2AA, 3AA, etc. When locks are required which are notoperated by the master key or otherchange keys in the system, they arereferred to as “single keyed” and givensymbols SKD1, SKD2, etc. When allhigher levels of master keys are to bedisallowed, suffix (NMK) to the symbol ofthe key which is to operate. This means“not master keyed.” Cylinder 1AA(NMK)is operated by 1AA only. The AA master isblocked from operation.Master KeyAAChange Keys1AA2AA 3AA SKD1To Specify a Grand Master Key System(3 Levels of Keying)The grand master is assigned any ONEletter, such as A. The master keys underthis grand are assigned TWO letters, thefirst of which must be the same as thegrand: AA, AB, AC, etc. are all mastersunder grand A. Masters BA, BB, BC, etc.,are all under grand B. Caution: Do not usethe letters I, O or Q because of possibleconfusion with the numerals 1 and 0,respectively. Also do not use the letterX due to confusion with cross keying.Change key numbers come after theletters. For master keys beyond AZ, insert anumeral between the letters to designatewhich pass through the alphabet theyrepresent. A2A through A2Z representsthe second pass of masters under grandA. A3A through A3Z would be the third.Change keys under these masters have thenumbers suffixed in the usual way: A2A1,A2A50, etc.If the cylinder is to be operated by itschange key and nothing lower than thesingle lettered GMK, the change numberis added to the GMK symbol. This isillustrated by the example A1 in theschematic shown. When locks are required which are notoperated by ANY master keys or otherchange keys in the system, they arereferred to as “single keyed” and givensymbols SKD1, SKD2, etc. When all higher levels of master keys areto be disallowed, suffix (NMK) to thesymbol of the key which is to operate. Thismeans “not master keyed” and can beapplied to any level in the system. CylinderAA1 (NMK) is operated by AA1 only. TheAA master and A grand are blocked fromoperation. Cylinder AA (NMK) would beoperated by the AA master only. Grand Adoes not operate.Grand Master KeyAMaster KeyAAABChange KeysAA1AA2AA3AB1AB2 A1 SKD1Key Systems.5045078-3/14

How to Establish Key SystemsKey Systems4-Level SystemsTo Specify a Great Grand Master KeySystem (4 Levels of Keying)The great grand master key is assignedthe symbol GGM. The rest of the symbolsare the same as those in 3-level systems:The GMKs are assigned single letters, e.g.,A, B, C, D, etc. Caution: Never use X fora grand master key due to the confusionwhich will result with cross keying symbolspresented on page 52.Masters under each GMK are assigned twoletters, the first of which is the same as itsrespective grand master key. Change keynumbers come after the letters. Changesunder the grand (A1, B1, etc.) and mastersbeyond AZ are handled exactly as in the3-level system already described.Changes directly under a grand are alsohandled as illustrated in the 3-level system. For changes directly under the GGMwith no intermediate level masters, thechange number is added directly to GGMas shown by the example GGM1 in theschematic. The AA master, A grand and GGM areall blocked from operation. Cylinder AA(NMK) is operated by the AA master only.Grand A and the GGM do not operate.Cylinder A (NMK) would be operated bythe A grand only, without the GGM.Great Grand MasterGGMKeyGrand Master KeyABMaster KeyAAABBABBChange KeysAA1 AA2 AA3 AB1 AB2 A1 GGM1 BA1 BB1 BB2 B1SKD1Selective Master KeysIt is often useful in large keying systemsto issue a high level master key tomaintenance personnel which allowsaccess across all master and grand masterkey boundaries of a keying system. Aselective master key is usually very closeto the system's top master key, bothphysically and through its realm of access.Nevertheless, it must be blocked fromoperating in many areas. The most common names and symbols forselective master keys are:ENG Engineer’s keyATT Attendant’s keyJAN Janitor’s keyHKP Housekeeper’s keyGRD Guard’s keyMAIN MaintenanceAATo designate that a lock be operated bya selective master key, suffix the symbolin parentheses to the standard symbol.Example: AA1 (ENG). This must be addedevery time the selective key is to operateand left off whenever the selective key isNOT to operate. For instance, you maylay out a system in which key AA1 is tooperate two different offices. Inside oneof them is an electrical cabinet which mustbe accessible to maintenance personnelcarrying the ENGGGMAABkey. That lock must be specified as AA1(ENG) while the lock for the other officemust be specified as AA1. Change keysdirectly under the selective key, such asENG1, are operated by all higher levelkeys, such as GGM.I.ike cross keying, a selective master keyis a convenience feature which decreasesthe security of the cylinders it operates andlimits the expansion and flexibility of theoverall keying system.ENGBABBBAA1AA2AA3AB1AB2BA1BA2BB1BB2BB345078-3/14Key Systems.51

How to Establish Key SystemsKey SystemsConvenience May Reduce CylinderSecurity and Hinder System ExpansionWhenever two or more different keys suchas AA1 and AA2 are both required tooperate the same cylinder, the cylinder'ssecurity is reduced. This is called crosskeying. When the cross keying occursunder all the same higher level keys, suchas AA1 and AA2, it is known as controlledcross keying. When it combines keys underdifferent higher level keys, such as AA1and AB1, it is known as uncontrolled crosskeying. In addition to reducing the security ofthe cylinder, cross keying usually imposeslimits on the flexibility and expansion ofthe overall keying system. This is especiallytrue of uncontrolled cross keying. Forthese reasons, it is strongly recommendedto allow personnel to carry more than onekey. Cross keying should be discouragedwhenever possible. However, whencross keying is required, it is specified asfollows, and should be summarized at thebeginning of each order.Case #1Cylinder requires its own change key.The illustration depicts part of a smallmedical building where two doctors sharea common receptionist. The receptionistgets the AA3 key. Each doctor carries akey which operates only one office, butis also cross keyed into the entrance fromthe corridor.Determine the symbol of the change key(example: AA3). Then prefix the letter X(example: XAA3). Then list all keys whichare to operate in an “operated by . . .”phrase. Example: “XAA3 operated byAA1, AA2, AA and A”. Note that X is acylinder specification only. The keys forcylinder XAA3 are designated AA3.XAA3Case #2Cylinder does NOT requireits own change key. Thisillustration depicts a sectionof a floor in a dormitory. Each student's bedroom keyAA1 AA2AA3operates the hall door lock. There is no need to constructX1Xa key which operates onlythe hall door.In this case, place an X atboth the beginning and endof the symbol and a numberAA4 AA5AA6between them. Example:X1X operated by AA1 through AA6, AA and A.X1X, X2X, etc. Again, alwaysinclude the “operated by . . .” phrasewith a complete listing of key symbols tooperate.AA2AA1ReceptionistOffice 1 Office 2XAA3 operated by AA1, AA2, AA and A.Key Systems.5245078-3/14
