You won’t just see Alabama football coach Nick Saban on the sidelines this fall.

The most successful head coach in the college game has signed another five-star deal that will have him pitching insurance.

Columbus-based supplemental insurance company Aflac will launch a series of commercials this week featuring Saban and the legendary spokesduck.

Talk about stealing a five-star recruit about of Georgia’s backyard?

In a social media announcement released this morning, Saban says, “I am now the head recruiter for Aflac.”

The campaign is playing off Saban’s success as the top recruiter in college football.

Aflac, Vice President Brand and Creative Services Shannon Watkins says Saban was the obvious choice.

“Our aim is always been to recruit a new series of policyholders,” Watkins said. “And we asked ourselves who is the best recruiter we could find, quite honestly, it’s Nick Saban. He’s a Hall of Fame icon. And when we think about Nick paired with our Hall of Fame icon in the Aflac duck, we think that’s going to be a winning combination for this football season.”

Like Saban, the duck is no rookie. The Aflac duck made its commercial debut on Jan. 1, 2000. That was the same year Saban left Michigan State for LSU. The most successful coach in the game, Saban took over the Alabama program in 2007.

Is Aflac concerned about ruffling the feathers of other collegiate fan bases?

“We are getting that question a lot because we have a lot of different fan bases here at Aflac as well as around the country,” Watkins said. “When we hired Nick we hired him because he’s the best recruiter. We didn’t hire him because of his affiliation. We wanted a Hall of Fame-caliber icon that shares the same values and principles as Aflac does.”

The first commercial will run during Saturday night’s Florida-Miami season-opening game on ESPN.
