Spain: Left-Wing Party Attacks Conservative TV Presenter Ana Rosa Quintana – Party Should Stop Insulting Journalists

Location: Spain, Madrid
Date: April 11, 2023

Political party Podemos insults well-known TV host Ana Rosa Quintana in a party promotional video shared on social media. The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands Podemos stop using derogatory language when criticizing journalists.

On April 11, Podemos shared an electoral video that includes images of journalist Ana Rosa

Quintana, naming her and calling her “shameless” (sinvergüenza).

“They (Podemos) urge the ladies to insult me when they watch television in the hairdressers,” said Rosa Quintana on her TV show in response to the video. The left-wing party “intends to gag critical journalists," she claims.

Journalist organizations in Spain have denounced the insult as a step too far.

Freedom of expression should not “become an instrument to try to intimidate information professionals” or to “try to get them to censor themselves to avoid being singled out,” says Madrid Press Association.

Former leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, who previously lost a lawsuit against Rosa Quintana, posted a video mocking the journalist’s claim she is being silenced.

“The video says that you are scoundrels and corrupt, and the truth offends Ana Rosa,” says the Podemos co-founder.

Ana Rosa Quintana is a famous conservative journalist and television presenter who hosts the El Programa de Ana Rosa show on Telecinco. She has been strongly critical of Podemos and its policies in the past.

The Coalition For Women In Journalism demands that Podemos and its leadership refrain from using inflammatory rhetoric against media members. Criticism of journalists is acceptable, but using derogatory language and name-calling is not. We call on the party to stop insulting journalists.
