The Winnipeg Art Gallery will unveil Saturday an exhibition of sculptures and figures created by Australian artist Ron Mueck.

Mueck is known for his portrait sculptures that portray humanity during all stages of life.

“Ron Mueck is a big name in contemporary art,” says WAG director and CEP Stephen Borys. “Whether he makes large things small, or small things large, the artist plays with scale in new and exciting ways.

The exhibit, NGC@WAG: Ron Mueck, is done in partnership with the National Gallery of Canada, and is on display until Oct. 4.

It includes the 2006 sculpture A Girl, a depiction of an oversized baby, and 2000’s Untitled (Old Woman in Bed), a sculpture of a tiny vulnerable woman in hospital linens inspired by Mueck’s ailing grandmother.

While Mueck’s art graces galleries today, he began his career making marionettes for television shows such as Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and in films such as 1986’s Labyrinth.
