Description

This plant forms extensive reed beds, it can grow in water up to 1 m deep and can form floating mats.

It protects the river edges against erosion and harbours nesting birds, fish and small mammals.

It is used in waste water treatment and thatching. The fibres are used in the textile and paper industry.

This reed flowers in bushy panicles 20-50 cm long.

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Blade, 20-50 cm long, 2-3 cm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Caryopsis: a dry fruit, grain.

Edible

Rhizomes, shoots and seeds. Marshmallows can be made from the sweet gum of young stems by drying and pounding it into flour, moistening it and shaping it into marshmallows.
