Description

Carline thistles have only disk florets, what appear to be ray florets are in fact the inner bracts, straw-coloured and shiny. The outer bracts are in many rows, leafy and spiny just below the flowerhead.

Grows on calcareous soil.

Flowers

The flowers are solitary or with 2-5 flowers. The disk florets are brownish-yellow.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Basal rosette: prostrate or erect, stalked.
Upper leaves: alternate on the stem.
Deeply lobed almost to central midrib, serrated, very spiny.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit, long, brown with feathery hairs.
