Appearance

Looks and Fly's Great, Build was enjoyable with no problems, I re-glued as much as I could inside the airframe as I do with all my ARFs, I cut out the graphics with a hobby knife to look as scale as possible.

I used the Rimfire 50CC, 120 Amp Avian ECS, 20 x 10 Elec prop, AR8360T receiver, 2 - 6s 5000s , 7 - A6380s servos and 2s lipos for backup.

I can't say enough on how much fun I have with it. Aerobatic flight is much better than a Scale Pitts - tumbles , knife edge, inverted, stall turns, it rolls its self-silly, landings are a breeze, I love it, very happy I bought it.

I was debating on this plan for quite a while, I tried to order it 2 other times, before I finally found it in Stock. I watched some videos of it nosing over for others, but it flew much better and handled much better than I was expecting. It is a simple assembly, took me about 3 days. Just follow directions, except for what screws to use in some places like the top wing support. Other than that it was uneventful. I did use the Saito FG-61ST, so I used a smaller tank. Also had to create my own mounting template. but that was expected. The plane sure is pretty to look at sitting in the sun. I did vinal lettering to avoid the clear tape look, even for the tail Pitts logo. No complaints of flight handling even in a strong crosswind takeoff and landing.

I have built several Hangar 9 models and similar brands and have come to expect a certain level of quality from them. I am happy to say I was not dissatisfied. Plastic mounts for servos made mounting a breeze, large hinges, plastic cowel, and the nicest covering I have seen come out of a box. Not a wrinkle or spot that needed any touch up. Build wise it was easier than most and the model can be completed by an experienced modeler over a good long weekend or a week of steady evenings. I chose an electric setup using a Spektrum 160kv motor, 20x10 prop, and Castle 160amp esc. Also a Spektrum 10ch powersafe receiver for ease. I needed an 18" extension for the throttle, 4 6" extensions from the receiver for the lower wing connections and Rudder servos to reach my receiver setup. The lower wings will need 12" extensions in the upper wings and 6" in the lower. N y connector was needed. I also needed 2 24" extensions from tge top wings to the receiver. Finally depending on your receiver you will also need at least 2 ec3 extensions for the receiver in order to place the two 2s batteries forward on the mounts. My build required an additional 12oz of nose weight to reach the recommended cg. Pay close attention to the rudder hinging and use a large amount of 30 min epoxy to secure the hinges to the fuse and rudder. Absolutely allow it to dry overnight before installing the tailwheel and springs. Otherwise it will pull the rudder hinging out. 
There were a few small drawbacks. The packaging wasn't as goid as Ive see in other models. Fortunately the parts were well wrapped and nothing was damaged. Second, the parts bags were not labeled and the manual was not printed well. Some of the parts were hard to locate. The manual was also difficult to read at times as the pics were too light. An experienced modeler will have no real problem but for someone with less experience it could be. Finally the canopy required a LOT, of careful trimming. The plastic easily cracked and tge adhesive tape supplied wasn't the best for attaching it. A decent vinyl or canopy adhesive might be better if you dont need to get into the cockpit again. Take your time with the cabanes and wing supports. They were a little finicky. One final note the decal set does not come with two of the decals shown to complete the model as displayed. Overall I am very happy with the kit and would happily buy another one.

I bought the DLE-60 as suggested by the designer on the video available on this site. He said he built the plane around the engine and no balance weight is needed. I had to add two full pounds under the engine box to properly balance. Great flying plane now that I got it dialed in. See my video on Youtube, "Pitts S2-B with smoke at Prado Airfield". Careful when balancing this plane

Great airplane! Flys and tumbles like a Pitts yet lands like an extra. Take offs are traditional Pitts style “ lots of right rudder”. Found lots of joiners in the fuse that didn’t have enough glue. Went over the whole plane with CA. My Pitts was damaged in shipping and took 4 fuselages to get a good one. I feel the weak spot is the joiner for the top wing, I could see it get broken while transporting the plane if not careful but when assembled it’s quite sturdy. Overall it’s a great plane and the dle 60 fits and flys it great

Pitts special

Mine went together in 3 weeks. Really like the servo mounts in the wings. Look like they are machined out of one piece of plastic, and they are very secure. The covering was superb without a wrinkle. Wings fit squarely on fuselage. I only gave it four stars because the manual was poor for a model in this price category. Pictures were very low quality and some things were barely explained. Example is you have to trim the canopy to fit(big gripe for this priced model) but there are no cut lines molded in. I nearly cut mine to short when I thought I was leaving plenty of overlap. Also it cracks easily, so you have to sneak up on the final cut or you will create a crack where you don’t want it. It should have been factory trimmed. The decals get a “d” in my opinion. Very cheap. And only 2 on the Rich Goodwin airshow decals, not four as pictured. Shame on you Horizon Hobby’s. That’s what I was paying for. After all that though, the Pitts 50-60ccc flys great. It tracks straight as an arrow and does great inverted flat spins. It is very rewarding at the field. It does want to bounce a little on landing, but I switched to the dubro inflatable tires and no more bounce. It’s actually fun to come in, keep the speed up and put the wheels on the ground for the full length of the runway. It’s that stable. Yes, I would recommend it as it looks really great at the field. Did I already say that?

Great finish; only unboxed so far but Very disappointed to see control pushrod setups designed from 15yrs ago. Much like the Top Flite Giant Scale series. Most disappointing was a joined elevator using a single one sided push servo. Very bad for a 120cc AC. I’ll modify and put two servos in the tail. Also the rudder is a one sided push/pull servo setup as well, vice a dual pull/pull control horn. Blown away Hangar 9 would bring out such an iconic and gorgeous AC utilizing such old building processes. Hope I don’t find more such issues. Haven’t seen hardware yet. Ugh
