The Original Influencer Tavi Gevinson Has Been Cast In The ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot

The original influencer and first-gen blogger Tavi Gevinson is to join the cast of the rebooted Gossip Girl, it has been confirmed. She joins Emily Alyn Lind and Whitney Peak, whose characters will replace Serena and Blair as the key players in the returning TV series. Gevinson, now 23, is also expected to take on a lead part, but little else is known about her role at this stage.

The prospect of Gevinson swinging her Marc Jacobs Stam bag into the series will, for many, be an appropriately nostalgic choice for our return to the Upper East Side. As Deadline reports, Tavi will also join Thomas Doherty, Adam Chanler-Berat and Zion Moreno among the new set of privileged teens running the school-age social scene in Manhattan.

Much of Gossip Girl’s original appeal stemmed from its characters’ wardrobe mantra of labels, labels, labels, and so Tavi’s former existence as a front-row favourite feels like considered casting.

If you’re not familiar with Tavi, let us refresh you. Before her teenage years had even arrived, her Style Rookie blog — this was way before Insta — was something of a phenomenon that paved the way for influencer culture, and proved it wasn’t only media outlets that could offer a valid voice within the industry. She sat front row at the shows, wrote for Miss Vogue, and whipped up both outfits and commentary that demonstrated an understanding of style that some struggled to comprehend coming from such a young woman. They listened.

Tavi later morphed her blog into Rookie, a platform that provided young women with a mix of feminism, pop culture and first person think pieces, before shuttering it in 2018 to focus on her acting work.

Gossip Girl could be just the vehicle to propel Tavi to household name status. Here’s hoping she has at least one hat moment during the reboot’s 10-episode run.
