IT SEEMS like an oversight on the part of American magazine People that Ryan Gosling has never been awarded the Sexiest Man Alive title - but in fact there could be more to it than that. The accolade - which was awarded to Chris Hemsworth earlier this week, and has recently been won by stars including Adam Levine, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper and Channing Tatum - was deemed not right for Gosling's image and therefore declined, sources say.

"They tried a few times, especially during his huge year in 2011," a team member "close to the cover negotiations" told The Wrap. "Multiple efforts were consistently squashed by the actor's team. The consensus was he's too serious for it, too artsy."

But People has rubbished the claim, maintaining that he just hasn't been chosen yet. Omitting him in 2011 - the year that he appeared topless in Crazy, Stupid, Love - and giving the prize to Bradley Cooper caused a serious backlash, with protestors wearing Ryan Gosling masks picketing People's Manhattan headquarters carrying signs that said, "Ryan Gosling is proof that there's a God and she's a woman".

"While I look forward to the day when Ryan Gosling is named Sexiest Man Alive, this was not his year," People's editorial director said. "Our 2014 honoree, Chris Hemsworth, was our first and only choice. If you want to know why, just look at him. I mean, seriously."
