Tavi Gevinson: A Fashion Retrospective That Spans Only 7 Years
September 2009
Then 13-year-old Gevinson brought her signature bric-a-brac quirk to her first New York Fashion Week, pairing a black Christian Siriano cocktail skirt and metallic purple Miu Miu shirt with a thrifted belt and vintage pearls. But a high-low mix was just scratching the surface of Gevinson’s sartorial creativity: on her hat is a Baggu—the reusable shopping tote—fastened with a guitar strap.

As Gevinson’s obsession with all things 90s grew—including her love for Sassy, the 90s teen bible that would help inspire her mini–media empire Rookie—she dove into the minimalism and neutral shades that defined the decade’s aesthetic. Here she wore a skinny cable knit over a tank dress in an abstract-expressionist print, with chunky white sandals over lavender socks.
February 2012
Gevinson’s style took a regal turn in February 2012, when she rolled into the Rodarte show in a vintage dress and elephant-gray Rodarte leather jacket. The new media darling crowned herself with a headband she made with junk-shop flowers.
September 2011
Days after her the launch of her hit site, Rookie, Tavi returns to New York Fashion Week. She accented the sweet pleats of her Prada lipstick skirt (a famous piece from the spring 2010 collection, which she hunted down on Ebay) with bobby socks and black-and-white kilties. Very rama-lama-lama, da-dinky-da-dinky-dong.
January 2010
The fall/winter 2010 haute couture shows brought Gevinson to national attention with #hatgate, when several editors sniffed that her irreverent pastel Stephen Jones bow fascinator was blocking their view at Christian Dior. Her icy blue ’do and organza Comme des Garcons coat and wallpaper floral tights would come to define her style as exuberant experiments in texture and color.

In her foliage-print dress and Dutch pancake braid, Gevinson looked all grownup on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where she appeared to celebrate the first anniversary of Rookie and the publication of The Rookie Yearbook.

For those who were used to seeing Gevinson only biannually, at New York Fashion Week, her polished look in the past year has come as something of a surprise. Of course, she wouldn’t be a fashion icon if she didn’t keep evolving. Here, she appears on Jimmy Fallon’s show once again—not to discuss her growing media empire, but her film debut in Enough Said—in a crimson skirt and top with oversize pockets and simple white sandals.
