Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser have decided to end their relationship after eight years of marriage.

Kartheiser filed for divorce from the Gilmore Girls star on August 10 at the Putnam County Supreme Court in New York, according to documents obtained by Us Weekly. The pair quietly wed in 2014, one year after Kartheiser proposed. The two actors first met on the set of Mad Men in which their characters had an on-screen love affair, but they waited until filming was over before pursuing a real-life romance. Following their engagement, Kartheiser enthused to Us Weekly, “I’m a very lucky man. I keep saying girlfriend. And then I’m like, ‘I mean, my fiancée!’”

The couple married in a small, private ceremony in Ojai, California and, a source told the outlet at the time, “It was a small and intimate family affair. They wanted something relaxed and beautiful. Ojai was the perfect place. His family flew out from the East Coast.” Bledel later revealed to Nylon that she was planning her own nuptials at the same time she was filming Jenny's Wedding in which she plays a lesbian preparing to marry into a conservative family. “It was surreal to kind of go through the scenes of the wedding itself and think about how much these characters have to go through just to get to that point,” she said at the time. “And, you know, it was so easy for me to just plan my wedding and celebrate and have everyone be happy for me.”

In 2015, the two stars welcomed their first child together, a baby boy. They managed to keep their son's birth totally under wraps until Bledel's Gilmore Girls: A Day in the Life co-star Scott Patterson accidentally spilled the beans. In May 2016, he told Glamour, “She’s really blossomed as a woman and now she’s a proud new mother and married and happy,” Patterson, 63, told Glamour at the time of his longtime pal. “We’re comparing notes because my son is about a year and a half older than her young son. I’m showing her photos and videos and what to expect. We’re just really enjoying each other’s company.”

Earlier this year, Bledel announced that she would be stepping away from her leading role in The Handmaid's Tale after four seasons. In a statement to Variety in May, she said, “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
