Hulu's election 'Triumph': the Insult Comic Dog gets a convention special

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and his human, Robert Smigel, went for walkies on the floor at the Democratic National Convention.

BEVERLY HILLS — This is a great election year —for Triumph to poop on.

Which is what he’ll do, figuratively speaking, on Aug. 11 when Robert Smigel takes his puppet, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, to Hulu for Triumph’s Summer Election Special. You'll follow Smigel and Triumph as they travel to both political conventions, making fun of Democrats and Republicans alike.

For Triumph, who lives to insult people, this election is a dream come true. “I think his voice fits right in,” Smigel said at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday. “That is sort of what attracted me to covering it….Now that the tone of politics is taking this nasty turn, it might be funny to see where Triumph fits in.”

As for where Triumph fits, Smigel says he was equally popular at both conventions — and equally well-known. “Everyone assumes that everyone at the RNC is like Margaret Dumont in Animal Crackers," he said of the Marx Brothers' dowager foil.'”

What did Triumph do at the Republican Convention? Well, for one thing, he set up a "dunk a Muslim" game, with Triumph as the carnival barker yelling "you know you want to!"

In case you've ever wondered where Triumph's accent comes from, Smigel says it's vaguely Eastern European, in line with his family. He’s been doing that voice ever since he was a kid — it's how he always imagined dogs would talk.

And now, us too.
