The Rough Barked Japanese Maple is a unique maple with rough, corky bark, quite different from the normal smooth bark of most Japanese maples. Combine this will graceful foliage with slender, lobed leaves that turn dramatic orange red in fall, and you have a wonderful small specimen tree for any garden. Growing a least 12 inches a year when young, this tree will soon develop a real presence in your garden and become a wonderful feature. In time it will be over 20 feet tall, and as much across, and the ridged and grooved bark becomes better and better as the tree matures.

  • Unique rough, corky bark makes an outstanding winter feature
  • Rich green, deeply divided leaves turn brilliant orange red in fall
  • Beautiful lawn or woodland specimen 14 to 25 feet tall
  • Easily grown in sun or partial shade
  • Outstanding specimen in a pot or for bonsai treatment

The Rough Barked Japanese Maple should be grown in full sun or partial shade, or the dappled shade beneath deciduous trees. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil with plenty of rich organic material added, and it should be watered regularly, especially during periods of drought. Prune to expose the trunk and main limbs as it grows, so that you emphasize the bark features all year round. This tree is normally free of pests or diseases, and it is vigorous, fast-growing and trouble-free.
