A German Olympic short-distance runner dubbed the world’s most beautiful athlete has switched lanes to the catwalk with a contract to become the one of the faces of the luxury fashion house Hugo Boss.

Alica Schmidt, 22, was only a peripheral figure at the Tokyo Games since she was left out of the women’s 4x400m relay team but she amassed nearly 2.5 million followers on Instagram with a stream of artfully posed photographs.

Now she has made her first modelling appearance for the brand at Milan fashion week. “I have absolutely no catwalk experience so I’m very excited to see how I’ll deal with it,” she said. “Thanks to my training I have the [requisite] capabilities.”
