Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom has the gall to take on Marvel heroes

In 50BC, Asterix led resistance to the Roman invaders who had conquered Gaul. Now the fictional warrior is once more carrying the dreams of his countrymen as they face another foreign invasion — this time of American superheroes.

The latest Asterix film will be released in France this week amid hopes that it can rival the Hollywood blockbusters that have eclipsed the nation’s own productions. Its director, Guillaume Canet, 49, who also plays Asterix, said: “These are our heroes, our own superheroes ... we want to try to equal the Marvel [characters] and all those films which make us dream.”
