Adverbial Phrases and Fronted Adverbials Worksheet Activities

This product covers reviewing adverbs and focusing on adverbial phrases. It also deals with grouping adverbs/adverbials phrases. This resource is versatile in that you can choose to focus just on adverbial phrases of manner or perhaps your students are ready to look at adverbial phrases of reason. This product now includes PDF fillable worksheets which students can complete on screen or you can use printables.

The presentation starts with a quick review of adverbs and their grouping.

Slides 4 – 10: reviews adverbs (whole class activity)

Slides 11 – 21: focuses on adverbial phrases of time, manner, frequency and place.

Slides 22 – 25: covers adverbs of degree and intensity

Slides 26 – 28: Whole class review of what has been learnt and students complete short exercises cooperating with each other or working individually.

Students can refer to the Adverb Phrase Mat on Slide 27. (You can print off and laminate for independent work).

Includes teacher’s example of different sentences.

Slides 29 – 31: Looks at adverbial phrases of reason

Slides 32 – 35: Explains fronted adverbials (adverbials phrases at the start of a sentence)

Slide 36: Whole class activity – students think of some fronted adverbials to complete the three sentences on the slide.

You can print off individual slides if you wish to do small group work.

Worksheets

1. Adverbs and Adverbial Phrases Sort (1) and (2) – Students sort the adverbs and adverbial phrases under the correct headings.

2. Worksheet – Tasks A and B: Match Up activity. Students draw lines to match up a sentence to a suitable adverbial phrase.

3. Worksheet – Using Adverbials (1) – Students write the beginning of their sentences and then tick any of the eight adverbial phrases to finish off. An example is given on the worksheet.

4. Worksheet – Using Adverbials (2) – This worksheet follows on from Adverbials (1) in that students rewrite their sentences but place each adverbial phrase at the beginning of their sentences remembering to use the comma.

5. Worksheets (2 pages): More exercises on writing fronted adverbials.

Extra worksheets

6. Tell Us More worksheets: Students are presented with 8 simple sentences for students to develop into interesting sentences giving more information.

E.g. Basic sentence: Peter got up.

Using adverbs/adverbials:

Early next morning, Peter got up in a hurry.

7. Challenge:

Reading text and completing associated tasks. Also includes comprehension questions.
