Another big surprise result came in on Monday night with Les Bleus kicked out

World champions France crashed out of the Euros at the hands of Switzerland on a dramatic Monday night.

The Swiss face Spain in the quarter finals now in Saint Petersburg.

Kylian Mbappe missed the decisive penalty in the shoot out after all other players had converted their kicks. It ended a poor tournament for Mbappe who failed to score, three years after he shone in Russia.

"Kylian Mbappe is incredibly sad, as are all the players, but nobody can be upset with him as he took on the responsibility of taking the fifth penalty,” said coach Didier Deschamps.

Seferovic opened the scoring for the Swiss after capitalising on shambolic Clement Lenglet defending, but Karim Benzema levelled after a brilliant piece of control.

The Swiss could have doubled their lead but Hugo Lloris saved a Ricardo Rodriguez penalty, and then Benzema pounced to tie the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute. By the 59th, he had put them ahead, nodding in from Antoine Griezmann’s cross.

Paul Pogba made the game safe for France with a strike into the top corner from distance. Or so he thought. Seferovic struck again and then Gavranovic netted late on to force the game into extra-time.

When Mbappe was denied by Yann Sommer on France’s fifth kick, it was over.

It was the first time Switzerland have won a major tournament knock-out game since 1938.

And another big scalp bites the dust after Portugal, the Netherlands and Croatia.
