PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – Sakura Alforte bagged the gold medal in women’s individual kata in karate competitions on Saturday in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.

The 20-year-old Alforte grabbed the team’s first gold after it came home empty handed during the Hanoi edition last year.
Alforte was also coming off a title victory in the Under-21 Karate 1 Youth League in A Coruna, Spain just last week, which helped build confidence after being in the field of 60 competitors.
“I wouldn’t say that I’m confident with the gold but I was confident for myself that I could deliver,” said Alforte, who is now studying in Japan after spending the first 18 years of her life in Paranaque City.
Alforte was also glad to contribute to the karate team after failing to capture a gold in Hanoi.
“I’m very proud to be able to reclaim the gold medal and that I was able to take revenge from last year’s frustrations,” said Alforte.
