acechar ( ah-seh-CHAHR )

(verb) to stalk; to await

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: La hiena pasó horas acechando a las cebras.

The hyena stalked the zebras for hours.

2: Creo que los soldados no están preparados para los peligros que los acechan.

I used the English expression "lie in wait.' However "wait" and "await" are both "esperar" in Spanish. - Daniela2041, Apr 27, 2017

Also a negative command uses the subjunctive form. No aseches (fam) aseche (formal). I know, I know, you are just checking to see if I'm awake. - Daniela2041, Apr 27, 2017

El acecho es lindo cuando un gatito lo hace, pero cuando un humano lo hace, es aterrador y criminal.

Stalking is cute when a kitten does it, but when a human does it, it is terrifying and criminal.

I wonder what the experts would say about ser vs. estar in this case. I would have probably gone with estar but not very confidently. 😓 - DilKen, Apr 27, 2017
Yes, I agree Ann, when people do it, it is creepy, weird and usually sinister! - FELIZ77, Apr 27, 2017
Ken I agree and would also use estar because it is a condition ir state, not a characteristic! ;) - FELIZ77, Apr 27, 2017
or state, and in these situations estar is used instead of ser. I hope this helps :) - FELIZ77, Apr 27, 2017
I thought I had "ser" and "estar" figured out, but between this one and "erizado" I'm confused again. - AnnRon, Apr 28, 2017

porcu...suggestion...."The dog lurks and eyes the cookies greedily, waiting for the owner to disappear so he can steal them." - Jraider, Apr 27, 2017
Porcu: This is a challenging sentence in Spanish for me. :) Here's my attempt: El perro acecha con ojos ávidos, mirando las galletas, y espera hasta que el dueño desaparece para robarlas. - DilKen, Apr 27, 2017
Here's the English for the above: The dog lurks with greedy eyes, watching the cookies, and waits until the owners disappears in order to steal them. - DilKen, Apr 27, 2017
After further reflection I would put the owner disappearing in present subjunctive: desaparezca - DilKen, Apr 27, 2017

Esteban: I think you should use the gerundio here: acechando. Grammatically it is acting as an adverb of queda. How does he stay near? By stalking them. :) - DilKen, Apr 27, 2017
I'm referring to the one in the first sentence. Also I think you need "se queda" to mean stay. - DilKen, Apr 27, 2017
My thought process was by stalking it stays near ... thanks for your insights. - Esteban_317, Apr 27, 2017

In this case the word "acechar" is not commonly used, most people would say "estoy esperando por una entrega de paquete que está por llegar a mi entrada" - DoctorSpanish, Apr 27, 2017
I guess I have to edit my post then. DoctorSpanish, I hope this new post is on topic. - NKM1974, Apr 27, 2017

In my experience, Acechar does not mean stalk or await separately, but a combination of the two words. It means "to prey" in the way a lion preys on a gazelle.

"El león acecha a su presa." "The lion preys on its prey".

It also means "to threaten", when there is an imminent danger, such as:

"La pobreza acecha a las familias de ese vecindario porque no hay buenos trabajos cerca." "Poverty threatens the families in that neighborhood because there are no jobs nearby."
