ávido ( ah'-bee-doh )

adjective ( avid; eager )

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speaker's suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Mi madre fue ávida lectora de tanto de ficción como no ficción, y siempre podía mantener una conversación inteligente acerca de cualquier asunto- bueno, solía evitar hablar de la taxonomía cladística conmigo porque no tuvo tenía ni un poco de interés en el tema.

My mother was an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction, and always was able to maintain an intelligent conversation on any issue- okay she used to avoid talking about cladistic taxonomy with me because she had not even the least bit of interest in the subject.

Una foto de mi madre y de mi tomada hace muchos años.

Parece que los caballos de un tablo de ajedrez pueden recorrer de forma ávida, este significa un algorítmo voráz. No entiendo muy bien a lo de que se trate, pero, bueno, si tienes que jugar a ajedrez en castellano, acuerdarte de esta palabra y todo saldrá muy bien.

It seems that the knights on a chess-table can run greedily, this means a hungry algorithm. I don't understand what this might all be about, but , well, if you happen to have to play chess in Spanish, remember this phrase and everything will be ok.

Keep eager to know and maybe you will become wise.

Tiene razón, pero si no llegaras a ser sabio por lo menos durante tu vida estas siempre ocupado con cosas interesantes.

He's right, but if you won’t become wise at least during your life you can always busy with interesting things.
