PREFACE
Much work has been left to be done by those who read the play as
prepared. The Spanish-English vocabulary is limited in most cases to
defining the word as it occurs in the text, and frequently only an
approximation of the meaning has been attempted. For instance, the
English equivalents of the same Latin origin as the sonorous Spanish
terms that are used so naturally by the man-servant Bruno and the
garrulous Nicolasa would be strangers to the lips of English-speaking
individuals of corresponding station.
Instead of the usual biographical data collected from many sources and
presented to the student in English, selections have been taken from
a life-sketch of Gorostiza written by the distinguished Mexican Roa
Brcena, who secured his information from Gorostiza's son. Naturally
the biographer has thrown into high relief the part which Gorostiza
took in the interesting events that occurred in Europe and in the New
World during his lifetime. We are mainly concerned with Gorostiza the
dramatist. Next to Juan Ruiz de Alarcn (1581?-1639), Mexico honors
him as her greatest modern representative in the dramatic field.
Furthermore, the play "Contigo Pan y Cebolla" is given first place on
the list of his many literary achievements.
This play the reader is left to gauge by his own standards. No two
individual opinions will be exactly alike, and the judgment of
non-Spanish critics will naturally be different from that formed by
those to whom Spanish is the native tongue. By good fortune there is
available a criticism of "Contigo Pan y Cebolla" written by Mariano
Jos de Larra, and to serve as a guide there have been included here a
few paragraphs from the pen of this contemporary of Gorostiza, who was
the foremost Spanish satirist and dramatic critic of his time.
Thus the reader has before him specimens of the prose writings of
three distinguished men. All three write in Spanish; yet all three
differ in style and in temperament. To those readers in America who
have hitherto looked for the best things with a backward glance there
should be a certain significance in the fact that two of these writers
are of Mexican birth.

used with the active infinitive to express the idea _had caused to be
produced_.]
[Footnote 2: His hatred for the (French) invaders. As the ideas of the
American and French Revolutions were permeating the Spanish colonies,
so Napoleon, quite without intention, gave to Spain herself an
impulse to national feeling. Charles III had encouraged the growth of
democratic ideas, and the framing of the Constitution of 1812 by the
Cortes of Cadiz marks the climax of radical Spanish development during
this epoch. (Cf. Charles E. Chapman, "A History of Spain," chap. xxxv,

[Footnote 2: 'Must have earned him the good will of our men of 1833.'
In 1832 General Anastasio Bustamante, "a heavy, dull, rather kindly,
and fairly honest aristocrat, though nominally a moderate Federalist,"
who had become President of Mexico in 1830 by the revolution which
displaced Don Vicente Guerrero, was driven from power by another
revolution in which General Antonio Lpez de Santa Anna joined. Gmez
Pedraza, the president whom Guerrero had deposed, was restored to fill
out his own term; then, in 1833, Santa Anna was elected, but retired
to his estate, leaving the vice-president Gmez Faras in power. He,
like Gmez Pedraza, attempted reforms directed chiefly against the
Church and the army, with the backing of the Federalist majority in
Congress. Thereupon the rival Centralist party, made up largely of the
Church and the rich proprietors, called in Santa Anna, who had been
biding his time to go over to their side.]

[Footnote 1: In Moratin's play the nia has married the old man after
a designing relative has assured her that her youthful lover has
married someone else. This rash act is doubtless the locura to which
Larra refers. As a virtuous wife she first dismisses the young man,
and when in her weakness she recalls him she is forced to treat him
with indifference and coldness, since she knows that her husband is
overhearing their conversation. Goaded to desperation, the young woman
finally enters a convent.]
BRUNO. Estuvo usted mala, eh?
Yo no digo
Vaya, y qu
tonto me hace usted! Conque no comprendo lo que quiere decir _para
siempre_?
mueras".
ESCENA II
DON EDUARDO. Amanece todava tan tarde ... y a no haber venido sin
afeitarme....
DOA MATILDE.
DOA MATILDE. No, no; a qu prolongar nuestra agona? Anda, Brunito,
toman siempre unas libertades!...
DON EDUARDO.
DOA MATILDE. Ay Dios.... qu susto!... No s lo que por m pasa!...
Me he puesto muy plida? Me voy, me voy a mi cuarto ... a suspirar ...
a llorar ... a ponerme un vestido blanco.... Ven t tambin Bruno ... y
el pelo a la Malibrn.... Oh, y qu crisis!... All esperar a que mi
padre me llame....
(Vase, llevndose tras s a Bruno)
ESCENA V
DON PEDRO.
DON PEDRO. Muchas reune usted, por vida ma, Sr. D. Eduardo:
nacimiento ilustre, mayorazgo crecido, educacin, talento,
moralidad....
DON EDUARDO. Oh, Sr. D. Pedro, y qu feliz soy!
ESCENA VI
BRUNO Y DICHOS
ESCENA VII
DON PEDRO. Y en suma, ella har lo que quiera, como lo hace siempre;
DOA MATILDE (aparte). Alguacil mayor! elegante ttulo por vida ma!
DON PEDRO. As, hija ma, puedes tranquilizarte, porque eleccin ms
DON EDUARDO. Pero qu tiene usted, Matilde ma? Por qu se ha
quedado usted tan callada?
DOA MATILDE.
partido tan ventajoso.
BRUNO.
no tiene remedio ... as....
ESCENA II
ESCENA III
BRUNO.
(Aparte)
No dudar ahora de mi amistad. (Vase)
ESCENA IV
BRUNO.
slo.
BRUNO. As podr or!
BRUNO.
rezaba....
DON EDUARDO. All creo hay uno y otro. (Se dirige a la mesa)
DON EDUARDO. "Matilde!!" Dos signos de admiracin ... "no tema usted
No vaya a parecerla todava
noticia....
DOA MATILDE. Arrima unas sillas, Bruno.... Y dnde? Esto es, si usted
no tiene inters en callarlo.
DOA MATILDE. No, no; sintese usted ... y como iba diciendo all fu
mi to aprobaba nuestro proyectado enlace, ste me instaba a que me
carbunclos!
ESCENA II
DOA MATILDE
ESCENA III
DOA MATILDE, BRUNO Y DESPUS DON EDUARDO
DOA MATILDE.
DON EDUARDO.
cosas, Eduardo, necesitan siempre pensarse algo.
DOA MATILDE. Oh!
castillo negro.
DOA MATILDE. No s lo que haga ... salirse una as de su casa sin....
DON EDUARDO. Pues si no, qu otro camino tenemos?
moribunda, me prometi usted casarse conmigo y seguirme, aunque fuera
dentro....
DOA MATILDE. Pues has de saber ... pero antes jura que no lo has de
decir a nadie.
DOA MATILDE.
gitanada!
DOA MATILDE. Encerrarme ... a m!... Bruno, est visto ... me quieres
sorprendernos apelar a mi ltimo recurso. (Hace como que saca las
pldoras)
BRUNO.
DON EDUARDO. Dices bien ... y una onza entera, otra partida ... as no
podemos errarla de mucho ... pon ms agua.
DOA MATILDE.
ESCENA III
DOA MATILDE. No, pero s extrao cmo has tenido paciencia para or
tanta grosera.
DON EDUARDO.
(A don Eduardo)
VECINA.
prisa ... agur ... pues no me huele a salchicha quemada?
ESCENA V
DOA MATILDE. Qu sabe esa mujer lo que dice? Amigas tengo yo,
qu pagar a otra mujer?
DON EDUARDO.
manos!... Qu buscas?
DON EDUARDO. Di, Matilde, has visto por ah algn cepillo?
DOA MATILDE.
DOA MATILDE.
MARQUESA.
caa ... no te parece?
MARQUESA.
comprarlo....
ESCENA IX
DOA MATILDE, Y LUEGO BRUNO
DOA MATILDE.
S, cundo
volver yo a tener ochocientos reales! Lo que tendr sern trabajos ...
y humillaciones ... y jabonaduras ... ah Eduardo! mucho te quiero,
muchsimo, pero si hubiera sabido....
BRUNO. Seorita!
BRUNO.
ESCENA X
DON EDUARDO. Djame en paz ... bribn ... tunante. Estoy por volver, y
por....
DON EDUARDO. No ser indigestin a buen seguro; pero, mujer, qu has
hecho en todo este tiempo? Cmo tienes todava as el cuarto? Vaya,
que no es mala porquera.
DOA MATILDE.
conmigo? (Llora)
DON EDUARDO. No, Matilde ma, yo no me enfado contigo ... cmo haba

there you are' etc. The redundant que as employed by the various

Spanish speech.

Creating the works from public domain print editions means that no
one owns a United States copyright in these works, so the Foundation
(and you!) can copy and distribute it in the United States without
permission and without paying copyright royalties. Special rules,
set forth in the General Terms of Use part of this license, apply to
copying and distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works to
protect the PROJECT GUTENBERG-tm concept and trademark. Project
Gutenberg is a registered trademark, and may not be used if you
charge for the eBooks, unless you receive specific permission. If you
do not charge anything for copies of this eBook, complying with the
rules is very easy. You may use this eBook for nearly any purpose
such as creation of derivative works, reports, performances and
research. They may be modified and printed and given away--you may do
practically ANYTHING with public domain eBooks. Redistribution is
subject to the trademark license, especially commercial
redistribution.
1.D. The copyright laws of the place where you are located also govern
what you can do with this work. Copyright laws in most countries are in
a constant state of change. If you are outside the United States, check
the laws of your country in addition to the terms of this agreement
before downloading, copying, displaying, performing, distributing or
creating derivative works based on this work or any other Project
Gutenberg-tm work. The Foundation makes no representations concerning
the copyright status of any work in any country outside the United
States.
1.E.1. The following sentence, with active links to, or other immediate
access to, the full Project Gutenberg-tm License must appear prominently
whenever any copy of a Project Gutenberg-tm work (any work on which the
phrase "Project Gutenberg" appears, or with which the phrase "Project
Gutenberg" is associated) is accessed, displayed, performed, viewed,
copied or distributed:
This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with
almost no restrictions whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or
re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included
with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.net
1.E.6. You may convert to and distribute this work in any binary,
compressed, marked up, nonproprietary or proprietary form, including any
word processing or hypertext form. However, if you provide access to or
distribute copies of a Project Gutenberg-tm work in a format other than
"Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other format used in the official version
posted on the official Project Gutenberg-tm web site (www.gutenberg.net),
you must, at no additional cost, fee or expense to the user, provide a
copy, a means of exporting a copy, or a means of obtaining a copy upon
request, of the work in its original "Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other
form. Any alternate format must include the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License as specified in paragraph 1.E.1.
- You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
the use of Project Gutenberg-tm works calculated using the method
you already use to calculate your applicable taxes. The fee is
owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments
must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you
prepare (or are legally required to prepare) your periodic tax
returns. Royalty payments should be clearly marked as such and
sent to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the
address specified in Section 4, "Information about donations to
the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."
- You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License. You must require such a user to return or
destroy all copies of the works possessed in a physical medium
and discontinue all use of and all access to other copies of
Project Gutenberg-tm works.
- You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.

Corrected EDITIONS of our eBooks replace the old file and take over
the old filename and etext number. The replaced older file is renamed.
VERSIONS based on separate sources are treated as new eBooks receiving
new filenames and etext numbers.
Most people start at our Web site which has the main PG search facility:
http://www.gutenberg.net
EBooks posted prior to November 2003, with eBook numbers BELOW #10000,
are filed in directories based on their release date. If you want to
download any of these eBooks directly, rather than using the regular
search system you may utilize the following addresses and just
download by the etext year.
http://www.gutenberg.net/etext06
EBooks posted since November 2003, with etext numbers OVER #10000, are
filed in a different way. The year of a release date is no longer part
of the directory path. The path is based on the etext number (which is
identical to the filename). The path to the file is made up of single
digits corresponding to all but the last digit in the filename. For
example an eBook of filename 10234 would be found at:
http://www.gutenberg.net/1/0/2/3/10234
