Atomic structure and spectral lines. Translated from the third German edition by Henry L. Brose

London: Methuen, 1923. First edition in English, 8vo, pp. xiii, [1], 626; a fine copy in the original printed dust jacket (with considerable text on it touting the importance of the book) with several minor breaks at folds. Sommerfeld was one of the most advanced theoretical physicists of his day. The "extraordinary extension, enrichment, and precision of Bohr's [quantum] theory by Sommerfeld contributed decisively to its rapid and wide-spread acceptance. Only five years after Bohr's first publication Sommerfeld, recognizing that the mathematical development of this quantum-theoretical atomic model had reached a conclusion of sorts, undertook a comprehensive exposition of the field. His Atombau und Spektrallinien, of which the first edition appeared in late 1919, immediately became the bible of atomic physics, and its successive editions, appearing almost annually in the early 1920's, chronicled the progress of this field up to the eve of the introduction of quantum mechanics" (DSB). This copy with the early ownership signature of Raymond D. Douglas, MIT class of 1924 and later a professor of mathematics there. Item #26835
