      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Ridley Scott's revisionist take on this oft-told tale offers some fine acting and a few gripping action sequences, but it's missing the thrill of adventure that made Robin Hood a legend in the first place.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Scott decided, I think, to get away from the whole campy thing in tights business and wanted to make this 'real'. So there is sweat and dirt and rats at the cheese and even bad teeth, which is fair enough, but it is also joyless. That's because the film is a prequel in search of a sequel. With any luck, we won't get one. Stephen V Interesting telling of the legend. Strong cast. Great musical score. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/24 Full Review Blu B So it's basically a prequel to the legend of Robin Hood done in Gladiator style which I guess on paper sounds interesting. And the best thing about it is probably the boring forgettable music. Everything else is subpar and completely misses the spirit of the source material. So much so I don't know why this was made. It's basocally trying to be gritty, real, and a deconstruction of what Robin Hood REALLY is and yet somehow completely misses the point. There is no life, charm, or fun in this at all. Crowe is miscast as Robin Hood even MORE SO than Costner and Cate is slightly worse than the bland Marrion in that one also. They almost never show emotion, especially Blanchett who has no emotion most of the time and no chemistry at all with Crowe. He has no charisma at all, just grittiness and rawness but that isn't Robin Hood. Everyone else is boring and forgettable. The villian isn't good and is more like a whiny brat than anything. The lighting is lifeless as well and the color saturation somehow doesn't help either. This also is VERY convuluted and has tons of pointless side plots with side characters and shows an adventure but somehow doesn't have any character development. Imagien Spartacus (1960) without any character and tons of side character interactions. It feels like a slog watching this because of how lifeless, meandering, and how much it misses the spirit of the source material. Skip This. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Kyle G It lacks the exceptional performances and music of Gladiator and doesn't know how to implement humor. Russell Crowe's performance seems melancholy and lacking in a consistent character to enjoy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Peter P With every historical epic he makes, it becomes more and more of a mystery how Ridley Scott managed to create Gladiator. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/29/23 Full Review Christina T Another R Scott movie the whole family could watch and enjoy together. I think this one is underated Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review A B This could have been great. Sadly, it's awful. And the capper is the need for the director/writer to have to empower the 13th/14th (?) century princess by making her a battle hardened knight at the end is just silly political correctness. Grow up. Do yourselves a favor....the original The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn, etc.) holds up very well. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
