AHERA Asbestos Survey

In Oregon, residential buildings constructed before Jan. 1, 2004 and all commercial buildings, regardless of construction date, must have an asbestos survey conducted by an accredited inspector prior to any demolition or renovation activities. We can send our Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Certified Building Inspector out to your site to conduct an official asbestos survey.

An asbestos survey report must include all of the following:

1. Dates the asbestos survey was performed

1. A copy of the accredited inspector(s) certificate and phone number(s)

2. The project site address and location where the survey was performed

3. The facility owner or operator’s name and phone

4. Description of the facility and area surveyed, including past and current use, area square footage, approximate construction date and number of floors

5. The purpose of the asbestos survey

6. Description of any limitation of the asbestos survey

7. A table listing all of the materials sampled and identified as asbestos-containing or presumed asbestos containing including the percent asbestos and type of asbestos, description of the material color, texture and pattern, the location of the material, description of the material condition as in good condition or in poor condition, identification of the material as friable or nonfriable and the approximate quantity of the material;

8. A recommended response action

9. A complete copy of the laboratory report including the laboratory name, address and phone number, unique sample analysis identification number, bulk sample analysis results, name of the analyst and the completed chain of custody for the samples

In many instances, asbestos surveys are required by law. Oregon DEQ sets the requirements for asbestos surveys and asbestos reports. Only an accredited asbestos inspector may perform the asbestos survey and generate an asbestos survey report. Asbestos inspection is also recommended in situations where asbestos testing is not legally mandated. Asbestos tests are necessary because asbestos fibers are microscopic and may not be detectable without testing. Asbestos can be released when building materials containing asbestos are removed or disturbed. These microscopic fibers can then be inhaled and remain in the lungs where they can cause damage leading to asbestosis and cancer. Schedule your asbestos survey today!

Asbestos Containing Waste Disposal Requirements

Not all dumps and landfills will accept materials suspected of containing asbestos. Prior to transport, asbestos waste containers must have a label attached with the name of the generator (person doing the removal) and the address from where the waste was removed. Asbestos-containing waste must be packaged in a minimum of two 6-mil thick plastic bags or similar leak-tight packaging with an asbestos hazard warning label with a DOT 9 diamond and generator information, and must be transported with a completed Asbestos Waste Shipment Report Form (ASN 4) and disposed of at a landfill permitted by DEQ to accept asbestos waste. A completed Asbestos Waste Shipment Report Form (ASN-4) must be provided to the permitted disposal facility at the time of disposal.
